Hi there,

I currently have an aqua one tank and fill it right to the black lid so you do not see space between water and lid. With a standard tank where does everyone keep their level and how do i know how much water to pump in to keep it there?

Regards Darren

most people fill it right to the rim so there is no space between the lid and water like you have done but i tend to fill it a few centimetres below because it tends to dribble down the side of the tank when the airator is on.

I too have an Aqua one tank, a 620T which is pretty tall. The black band round the top is very narrow and I soon learnt that filling it to that level was aking for spillages!

I have extended the black band by running black plastic electrical tape round immediately under the plastic band and I fill to the bottom edge of this so the water surface is just hidden. In case you think this is naff I have to say this is not the first tank I have used this on and if done carefully it looks every bit as good as a manufactured item.

Two of my tanks have a 1" black band around the top, so I fill it to the bottom of the black band level - this then leaves approx 1" gap between water and hood. With my Juwel tank it has a max indicator level inside and I fill mine just below that.

It can be a bit dangerous to fill the tank right up to the top of the glass edge because as soon as you put your hands in there when doing tank maintenance, or adding decorations or floating a bag of fish - that water level will automatically rise and you'll get spillages - which could be dangerous if your sockets/plugs are located beneath/next to your tank etc. I think that is why most manufacturers put that black band at the top of tanks, as a safety measure.

I leave a quarter inch between the top and the surface of the water. That gives me enough extra volume to put my hand in if necessary but enough extra water that I don't have to add more to keep the level out of sight between weekly water changes.

then thats where I will go too, I guess my weir will somewhat determine it.

I just fill mine up so i cant see the water level line...

I dont fill them right up cos when i put my arm in it use to overflow lol. (stupid big arms lol)

I don't have snail really except those pesky feral things that come with plants...
