Just got the heater and Eheim cannister filter for the new tank last night, and all seems to be running smoothly.

A question I need to ask: should the tube that empties back into the tank be under the surface of the water, out of the water (if so by how much), or doesn't it really matter at all? Just wondering if part of the process that keeps a tank healthy is the bubbling of the water falling a short ways down ....

the churning of the water helps with gas exchange. i prefer to keep my tanks at the top just under the rim. the water can get loud at times if it is falling too far.

If you put the spray bar an inch or two under the water, and aim the outlets so that they are angled upward, they will cause a disturbance to the surface that will aerate the aquarium, while still providing the silence that eheims are so good for. It is not necessary to have the water fall from above, it just matters that the surface is not perfectly still. What matters is that the surface is being disturbed, but that doesn't mean we need to create white water rapids in our aquarium either ;)
