hello there could anyone tell me if i am doing the right things when changing the water,i change about 20% of the water once a week, clean all the alagae from the glass and ornamants and trim and pull out any dead leaves on the plant, now after putting the water back in i add some stress zyme and sometimes some easy balance is this the right thing to do or not, also i have read about adding some salt, what does this actualy do and should i start doin it,at the moment i only have 4 zebra danios, and 7 neon tetras, did have some clown loaches but they didnt last 2 mins, sorry for the long post any help much apprecited

has the tank been fully matured??
when you syphon tank do you clean the filter out in the water you have removed from tank?NEVER USE TAP WATER FOR FILTER SPONGES
sounds ok what you are doing :good:
i never use salt so wouldnt bother...how long was tank running when you introduced clowns?

many thanks for reply,he tank had been running for about 4 mths, also lost my plec at the same time s clowns,i think it was down to adding some ph down(advice giving by pets at home),as for the filter i change the white one every 2 weeks,as for the others not sure what you have do,change them as and when or just wash them out

Have you tested your ammonia and nitrite levels m'friend? ph is important in long term survival for your fish, but you need to get the water quality right first like making it safe. 4 months is awhile, so your tank must be fully cycled. I've had mine fully cycled for 6-7 weeks and have four fish at the mo' and my levels are fine, just get it tested to see where you are :good: apparenly clown loaches are very adaptable-ph 5.5 to 8 so it was probably the water levels? 90% of problems are down to water apparently, but as long as you do everything right you should be cool.
sorry if this didn't help
good luck m'friend
:good:

what are you planning on getting in your tank eventually?

Also if it was a plec and the water is fine it may of died by lack of algae (a tad far fetched) The salt isn't necessary depending on the fish you have... Catfish cannot tolerate salt and most fish that are "freshwater" can be fine without any....

The only thing you don't mention is testing the water. A kit will give you the readings to confirm all OK in your tank, but seems to be alright by what you say. :good:

i take a sample of water to my local fish stockists to check every couple of weeks, and if i need to do anything they advise, the 2 clown loaches i did by had white spot from the shop treated them but they never recovered mislayed the receipt so couldnt take them back, going to get 6 tiger barbs when i come back from holliday

Catfish cannot tolerate salt
Really?

So how does that explain the coral reef catfish Plotosus lineatus which lives on (as the name suggests) coral reefs? Or the Family Ariidae which contains many euryhaline fish?

Beware of blanket statements ;)

What QuotheRaven probably meant to say is that you have to be careful with salt when you have freshwater catfish, which is true, because most species are more sensitive to it.

when doing the water change does using bolied water or filtered water any good or shouldnt it be done
