Alright you guys, so i added household ammonia to my 5.5 gal freshwater fishless cycling tank and it bumped the number to 8. Ppm.

Is that bad? Should i just leave it alone or make a maybe 10% water change?

I would take out enough water to have 4.0 ppm in the tank. At 8.0 you may build the wrong sort of bacteria.

Have a look at the bottom of the page in this link http://www.fishforums.net/aquarium-calculator.htm

You'll find a calculator there to ascertain how much ammonia to add to bring the level up to 4 ppm.

i just wanted to do an update on my new tank cycling .

so for the past few days i've been doing about 10% water change on my 5.5 gallon tank.

i managed to keep the ammonia level from 2. to 4. ppm.

there is still no nitrite every time i do a water test. i don't know, is this normal? cause i searched the internet and saw graphs that in 10-20 days of cycling there should be nitrite building up already. I'm worried that my tank is not making good and beneficial bacteria.

also on monday i installed a heater and air pump.

You have to stay consistent with it and just wait it out. It'll happen. When the ammonia starts dropping on it's own then you'll be on your way.

here's another update!

i've been cycling for 15 days already but my ammonia is still the same --> 4ppm. i am really getting frustrated and annoyed. my nitrite and nitrate is still 0.

i don't know what to do to speed up the process. and i really think i messed up the cycle and i don't want to start over.

Thats normal dont fret too much.

Best conditions are pH 8.2 & temp of 80f. If your pH is low add some bicarbonate of soda to the tank to buffer the pH.
