I've go an oscar and a pleco, which one produces a stringy waste which floats around the tank?

Also, how can i get rid of it without netting it?

Cheers

I would have to say that that would be the plecostomus. They are living poop machines.

Edit: The only other way to get rid of it is to vacuum it up.

I agree that the culprit is the pleco. I swear that as they eat they poop it right out again. And it can get really long to. I also agree that the best way to get rid of it is to use the gravel vacuum.

Actually, imo, it's a good practice to take the gravel cleaner out everyday and clean up the food and poop and take 1-2 gallons out of the tank.

It does no good sitting in there creating ammonia and it gives them fresh water and at such a small dosage that you don't need to dechlor it, imo.

Take about 30 seconds and clean it all out every night if you have time and your fish will love you for it.

I use my turkey baster in there to suck it up and get it out of there, as i also have a proco potty machine. LOL I wish i could vaccuum them every day, but i have 6 tanks, 2 young kids, a hubby, 1 dog, 2 cats. My hands are too full to do it everyday. Sandy

I had one in my big tanks til I moved it. Yeah it is a good idea to clean it out everyday I guess, but who really has the time to do so?

i have 2 convits and there poo will get to be like almost double there body size and they arernt small!!

first of all it is not white stringy poo is it? that could be an indication of internal disease. if not, they are pooping machines. i usually vaccuum my tanks after feeding. i got 700 gallons of water, hubby, 2 kids, dog and also work two jobs. spare time i go to see my new nephew. once you get in the habit of doing it, it only takes about 5 minutes a tank. i usually vaccuum after feeding anyways to not have food on the bottom of the tank.

best way to vaccuum it is to take a section of syphon hose with a peice of nylon pantyhose on the end secured by a rubberband. get the syphon going and skim over the gravel letting the water fall back into the tank. the junk on the bottom stays in the nylon.

Ok....let's see.................

A wife....3 dogs.....a parrot.................................................

oh ya and tanks.....at last count 110!!!!

Work a 50+ week at my job and run a fish retail business from my house!!

Between work, the tanks, dogs, bird wife and shipping fish there is no time for anything else!!

I do manage a few hours sleep a night tho....HMMMMMMM perhaps that is my time to do poop removal.

You guys think you have it bad.......I stock on average 10 tanks of different plecos at any given time ranging from 6 to 25 plecos per tank.

I wasn't suggesting it had to be done. I was merely letting him know that it could be done and beneficial to do it if it was a worry he had seeing it in there.

uh...it's good to see everyone so active in their daily lives. to those with families, jobs and pets...thank you for the time spent dishing out advice to people who don't know anywhere else to go (their fish thank you too :)).....

keep in mind that by owning and caring for a tank full of fish, the lives of de little fishies are in your hands. if you don't have time for them, you shouldn't be keeping them. they don't have any other options.

not to be harsh, just to be
