If it’s too clogged up, the pump inside the filter won’t receive enough water, and may try the motor.

Just take it out and rinse/squeeze it in tap water. I guarantee you it will not mess up your cycle.

Thanks! I'm still gonna do it in dechlorinated water just to be safe

Fair enough but bear in mind dechlorinator takes at least 10 mins to work so add it to a bucket and wait. I agree though, if it's just the intake sponge under the tap is fine.

Take a cup of tank water and give it a squeeze in there, job done. Can't see the point in washing it in tap water, not that it will be of any detriment but you may as well use the safest method which would be the one described in my first sentence.
