I could go on for weeks about WalMart, but my simple philosophy is that if a fish is dying at a WalMart, it's probably not going to get what it needs unless someone like myself takes it home and saves it. That being said, I do visit WalMarts on a regular basis - NOT to shop there, just to check on the welfare of their fish. I always find something wrong - not all that long ago I found one floating dead still in his cup, still on the shelf. There was a guy working in that department not 10 feet away from the little dead guy. It was a really pretty doubletail - nosedown, grey - in a dirty cup. I've posted several times on them here, I could literally make you all scroll for minutes to get to the bottom of a rant on them. But I wont.
I buy ONLY the sick fish - i buy my tanks, gravel, hidey places, plants, food, etc. at other stores - and then I go home and call WM and talk to a manager, then I also call the district manager. I have them both on my speed dials on my cell. They hear from me on a regular basis. I try to remember everyhting I see in the stores and write it down when I get to my car. After I make those phonecalls, I also get on their website and email in. I NEVER get a response - and I've probably contacted them at least 25 times. AT least they're hearing from me. And I MAKE IT VERY CLEAR to whoever I'm contacting that I don't buy anything at their stores anymore besides dying fish because I am so apalled by the way they care for (or DON'T care for, rather) their fish.
People rant at me all the time and tell me that I am adding to the problem of WM continuing their vicious cycle of selling sick fish if I keep buying them. Well, no I'm not. If I continue to let them know that I am spreading the word about them to everyone, and that I've stopped shopping there, AND that I don't buy tanks, food, etc. and WHY - they get the picture. It's getting them where it hurts, their bottom line. If everyone who got pissed about how they treated their fish ranted and raved and let them know we don't shop there anymore and why, there might be some results.
And on the subject of returning fish, it's probably the right thing to do, BUT... I could never bring myself to do it. I always have to give my little guys a proper ceremony and bury them like they deserve to be. I have this weird thing about knowing a fish would go on it's final send off being flushed down a WalMart toilet.

I know that's probably a really silly thing, but it's just how I feel.
