I went into walmart after work today and they had just got there shipment in. There were like 8 male bettas in tiny cups with not alot of water. I saw this one guy and decided to get him! Hes whitish/pink with a redish head

Can I say I was appaled at the way there female bettas were kept
They were in with the angels... Arent angels agressive towards bettas? And im no expert on bettas but there gills seemed infected maybe? Like they were red... Is that how there suposted to be? I wanted to get one but I need to set up a tank for them because I dont just want one. Oh and did I mention there were dead fish in this same tank?

Does anyones else have this problem with there walmart? And get this I asked what the policy was on fish and the lady replied "we dont guarantee our fish" I was like "why"? And shes like on May 2/05 they changed there policy.... Why would they do that? SO im like "so what if I buy this fish and I take it home and it dies the same night, im just out the $5 I just spent?" She was like "thats our policy"

I Know its only $5 but its the principle of the matter. I just had to share my experience. Thanks for reading.

The Walmarts near where I live are terrible. I refuse to buy anything from them anymore. I haven't set foot in a WM since January. I always hated to go there any way but when I saw how they treated their fish (or ignored them may be ther better phrase), I decided that was the end. If you do a search on this forum (or almost any other forum you may visit) you will find a ton of very negative posts about WM. All of the chain stores (WM, Petsmart, Petco, etc) have problems but WM has way more than the rest. I could type 2 pages but I'm going to stop here.

I agree with that completely, but like you, I sometimes feel compelled to help the poor bettas there! I feel so sorry for the fish that I can see buying a betta at WM even though I hate how ignorant they are about fishkeeping.

We have two walmarts in the area, one doesn't have fish at all, and the other actualy isn't too bad, their females are in clearly marked female cups, good sized cups too, yknow, as far as cups go.

My Walmart doesnt carry alot of bettas and I think thats a good thing because the most I've ever seen was 3-4 and they didnt look sick but at the same time they didnt look happy in those little cups either! I've never seen female bettas there.

I will say in defense of the WM near me ( I can't belive I'm saying this) that they never had more than 5 or 6 bettas at a time. Of course that was a few months ago before I quit going to WM.

1st: angels are not aggressive to bettas, they are one of the tank mates as they are basically the same, semi agressive slow long finned fish

2nd: If the females were white and red, like the one in my av, then yes, the gills should be red, as that is the color of the fish

3rd: The people at the front desk will not even know the return policy. I can return a betta from mine that died a year ago back today, and they wont even say anything. Plus they dont even require bodies.

Oh really? You can keep bettas with angels? I didnt know that! I guess you learn something new everyday :fun:

wrs - Some of the angels were the color of your betta in the pic but some were not and they still looked not well...

What else can females bettas be tank mates with? Im still not impressed with the care at walmart.

My walmart carries the bettas in the separately labelled cups. The biggest problem I have with them is that they stack them in such a way that the betta on the bottom can't get air. I and my boyfriend always fix that when we're in Wal-Mart. I don't mind shopping there, but I do wish they wouldn't sell live animals. The company can't afford to search for and hire the proper personel to take care of the fish, so they shouldn't have them at all.

Ya, when I was in walmart yesterday I also unstacked the cups so the bottom ones could get air ;)

Angels and bettas together aren't a good idea but it's kind of for the opposite reason. Generally bettas see any fish awith a large tail as a threat so the bettas would be more apt to attack the angels tthan the other way around. In general, bettas aren't good tank mates for any fish with large tails. Having said that and before someone says they have them together and it's not a problem, I know some people have them together without any problems so everyone has to make their own decisions.

yes, females are guppies are okay.

also, not all angel;s have large fins, only veil tails have long flowing fins,

A lot of people would probably condone it but I've always had success with it. In fact, you could probably put two females with guppies if you wanted and had room for it. Female bettas are a lot less agressive then the males.

Im thinking of putting some female bettas with angels, guppies, platies and mollies. Would they be ok?
Thanks :)
