What can I keep in a 44.5" L x 4.5" W x 25.5" H wall aquarium? I have a choice of either blue gravel, black gravel, or pool filter sand, so I want to make my fish look good with those colors. I haven't chose the color gravel yet. What fish I get will also reflect what decorations that I get. I want something interesting that will move around a lot. I was thinking that blue and yellow dwarf cichlids will look good with black gravel. How about dwarf puffers? Albino fish with black gravel and black background? Also when you recommend a fish please recommend what decorations you think will look good with that fish. Thanks in advance. I was just thinking how hard would it be to go saltwater and do seahorses?

well since youve only got 4.5" of turning space for your fish it aint wise to have any fish that would consider this not enough to turn around in, a shoaling fish would be great as the total litreage needs to be taken into consideration as well.
prob not your cup of tea but if i had that tank i would choose black gravel, cover the most of it with riccia, build a slate hill and have some of that with riccia tied to it to give you different hieghts of riccia would plant a tiger lily in one corner so it grows to the surface and a thin piece of bogwood as well, then i would fill it with some sort of small tetra eg neons would add a fantastic splash of colour against the riccia, black gravid and the tiger lily, black neons would also work with the them and finally rasboras. i think that would be an ace tank with loads of colour but not to intense.

thats my opinion but as your thread states you like cichlids, not to hot with info on drawf chiclids but if they were suitable for that tank then they would make a great feature in your tank. :good:

Thanks modaz, but I'm not great with planting at all. How easy is riccia to grow and would I need CO2 or anything like that?

For a small tank like that and a tank that long, I'd recommend Danios of some sort. Although Wolf may have something to say about that lol he is the Danio expert after all :p

seahorses WOW now that would be great but a hell of a lot of hard work involved. riccia grows well without Co2 but with liquid plant food but with Co2 it grows even better ofcourse, i think this tank you have is around 220L which is a fair size considering its only 4.5" wide.

the only danio I'd even consider are Danio [microrasbora] erythromicron

I would recomend any otherMicrorasbora (except rubicens) or any or the Boraras species.
also Sundadanio axelrodi would do just fine in there as would Chela dadiburjori

personally I don't like these tanks and if it were given to me i'd plant it and use it to breed shrimp.

if i was gonna choose fish for me i would use sand as a substrate and add some shells and put in some small shell dwellers in there

:hyper: :hyper: :hyper: yep no way near 220L whoops sorrrrrrrrrrrrrry  aint been up long and puppy ive got is going nuts so a bit distracted

Thanks everyone for the replys. Some of these ideas sound really great. I am going to look into riccia and does anybody know anything about sea horses? Thanks
