I went to wal-mart yesterday and the good guy who acutally knew a little about fish must have quit.

There is a teenage girl, maybe 19, and a guy (same age) doing fish when I go there. They are never there together though, it's always different days.

Anywho... this girl and her boyfriend that I've seen around school were getting some fish and saying "would this be okay for a beginner aquarium?" I'm guessing it was a bowl or 10 gallon (she never asked). So she was throwing fish in a bag saying oh ya algae eaters? Here is a plecostomus and then there is this thing. So they get "the thing" (a chinese algae eater) one tiger barb, one serpae tetra, one angelfish, one of everything. And they pointed at the pacus and she was like no... those get to about 8 inches you wouldn't want those. ok... right on the tag it says 20". What a retard. and she's walking around throwing out bs information acting all cocky like she knows her stuff. Ugh.... she made me mad. So after everyone else left I walked up to her and said, "why did you sell those people all those fish?" and I also asked why she was mixing incompatable fish for people. She went off about how she knows her stuff and to leave her alone and that she knows what she's doing. So I just said ok, "Can you tell me the name of this fish?" as I pointed at a gold gourami. And she's like ummm.... and all I said was "thats what I thought" and walked away...

I don't buy from the Wally-World here because about 3/4 of their fish are dead or dieing, and the people working the place don't seem to care. Also I've never been a fan of the butter tubs they keep their bettas in,or their plastic lid and UPC stickers for easy scanning throught he express lane

LOL, just last week Walmart finally struck a deal with the City Counsel to build a Walmart in Chicago.

I think we were the last major city in the U.S. not to have one.

I've never seen a Walmart pet section in my life. :dunno:

LOL but I do remember as a kid always having to check out the fish section at K-Mart and Woolworths.

well the fish at my wal-mart are in good shape. You can never find the person who's supposed to be working that department. So if you ever wanted to buy a fish there you couldn't.

:flex: ♂ Yeah, the fish section at my local WalMart is pretty sad.
As I've said in a previous post, I can't imagine why WalMart
even bothers selling fish. When you see the crowds, and all the
other stuff they sell, their revenue from selling fish must be some
really, really tiny, (like .0001 %) portion of their sales.

Our Wal-Mart fish section is a division of electronics, you can imagine the knowledge boiling over...
Yesterday, I was there and I looked at their female bettas (in cups-yuck) every other one I picked up was dead and suspended mid-cup like they were in some type of gel. It was so disgusting.

i have several walmarts with pet sections near me and none have any idea what they are doing. all the fish are in ungodly health and a lot are just floating there, por guys

i've never been in the fish section of walmart, and i'm glad. it would be funny if we launched a walmart fish boycott for animal rights

personally, i think if you want to get fish from a SUPERstore, try petco, and for equipment, try petsmart. i've been to both and they're decent, especially petco.

My Walmarts never have anybody in the fish department. They do keep most of there smaller fish tanks well kept but the oscar goldfish and gourami tanks are sad. :(

Also I've never been a fan of the butter tubs they keep their bettas in,or their plastic lid and UPC stickers for easy scanning throught he express lane

theres nothing wrong w/that at all. its better then tose little bathroom sized cups they theyre kept in in other stores, like petsmart. and its better then being in a bag.
my walmart has great fish departments. they have fish that u cant find at the other more profesional fish stores. and they sell all their things for cheap! and the little cards say what to keep the fish w/and what not 2, so if the sales person seels u things that dont go w/eachother its ur falt as well for not reading the cards. u have 2 remember that its not just the sales peoples fault if the fish dont go together, its the ppls as well.

I have several a "wal-mart fish" they are all healthy!!

I agree with wrs about the cards..that is the "buyers" responsibilty to read up on the fish they are about to purchase!!

ON the other hand..I am pretty bummed...I went to the new petland that just opened..and I bought 6 long-finned blue danios.....I have already lost 2 of them!! (it has been over 48 hours..so they are no longer "replaceable"..it has been 4 days!!)

thats a stupid policy! all my lfs have from 14 days to un limited. un limited is at walmart. i have 4 fish from walmart that are doing great.

My Wal Mart is actually superior to anything else nearby including the lfs and the small locally owned store.I was really disappointed by the lfs.No decent help.Self service and little tubs for fish.No posted info on fish and no returns either :grr:

Wal Mart has a couple of good fish people working there and lots of posted info. The ones who don't know about fish are at least honest enough to say so.They also have the best deals on equipment. When I went to put my 55g on layaway the guy was extremely helpful and even made sure I got the tank on the bottom as the packaging was in better condition. They do have dead fish at times, and the dreaded betta cups as well. But they also have someone who comes in and removed the dead fish on a regular basis. The small store leaves then to be eaten by the rest. From a nutritional standpoint that's probably not a bad idea...but it looks pretty disgusting and isn't much good for sales :X

I went in to see about a fish I'd wanted and it was dying in the tank.I told the owner, after he asked if I needed anything. He never even went to look

Koda

dude i feel greatful i dont go to those kinds of lfs ans superstores in america. here at the lfs wen eva someone buys a new tank they carry it to the car for you and at a place called Aquarium City in Perth the owner hires ppl that knwo about fish and wen eva i buy a fish the helper always asks wat size tank, wat fish and if i got troubles they help me. and all there fish are in perfect conditions. geez......i feel sorry for americans.
