it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission
Just though I would bring to your attention a story I have recently been following of Leigh Animal sanctuary being exposed for killing greyhounds and other dogs deemed too ugly or old to be re homed, here is a link to the full story by the times http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-2361675,00.HTML this Saturday there has been a vigil organised for all the dogs that have lost their lives at this terrible place, I will put the details below, we need as much publicity as possible to stop this horrific act. Many thanks ally

There is a planned vigil in memory of the dogs who have lost their lives because 'legally' this country allows them to do so. It is planned that this PEACEFUL vigil will take place this Saturday between 11am and 2pm. There will also be a minutes silence in memory of the dogs who have been killed.

This vigil is going to be announced officially by Greyhound Action.

Dogs welcome

Address to meet at 10.45 for an 11am start

The Greyhound (pub)
East Lancs Road, Leigh, WN7 3SE

Please don't park in pub car park as they are happy to support us but we don't want to deny them business!

:-( this is what i hate about greyhound racing, as soon as they get too old or arent good enough to race they are put into a rescue centre, then usually put down, my uncle has 3 retired greyhounds that he rescued from being put down

this place actuall takes payment from track people to kill the greys, imo i think their policy is if it is an ugly dog (not just greys but any dog) or too old too ill etc the ones that a harder to rehome for one reason or another they kill them saves wasting man hours and money, they would prefer to use what resources they've got on desirable dogs so they make more money when they sell *cough* rehome them

Well the words those people deserved to be labelled with are not suitable for all eyes. It's heartbreaking that thishappens especially the greyhound plight think they usually make it to 3 or 4 before they get dumped off the track.
I can't make it but my thought will be with your cause and those dogs that died.

In many ways, this is no different from any other kill shelter; space is limited, homeless animals are numerous, so only the animals who seem best suited for adoption are permitted to live. The main difference, and the huge ethical concern, is that the group seems more interested in getting money for killing dogs than it is in saving dogs, which is unacceptable. Greyhounds being PTS by shelters is no new thing; the industry shoves the dirty work off on shelters, who are usually more than glad to take the money and save the dogs from the alternate fate - laboratory research, which is where most other greys who aren't adopted or PTS go. However, this doesn't really justify the killing of every greyhound that walks through the door and never even gets a chance at adoption; most shelters have moved away from this dated practice, but this rescue seems to be embracing it.
Angry though we may be with the shelter, however, we should be equally angry at the people who put the dogs in that situation. Irresponsible owners who abandoned their pets because they refused to work around any obstacles. People who didn't bother to spay, neuter, properly contain, or train their pets. People who got an animal when they just weren't prepared and made that animal pay the price. And of course, the greyhound racing industry, which kills about 20,000 dogs (in the US alone; don't know how things are across the pond) every year just to make money off of people's gambling addictions.

That is terrible, I knew alot of greyhounds were being put to sleep but the fact that a so called sanctuary to rehome dogs was doing it for profit is disgusting.

That is sick and depressing. There is no such thing as an ugly dog. Killing dogs to"save the peoples money", yeah right. They should have a baseball bat shoved up thier butt for that. That crap makes me sick. They deserve the exact same punishment as they gave to the dogs.

So sad
I think Greyhounds are one of the worst cases of animal cruelty.I have a friend who has 4 rescues and they are total couch potatoes but poor Tilly was found tied up in a wood with her ear hacked off so that they couldnt track the owner down by the tatoo
