Ok so i know all of the work involved with having a chameleon. I was wondering if the (Exo Terra. Flexarium 260 gallon 76 x 76 x 183cms) was ok. Also is this correct, young chameleons should be fed everyday with a calcium dusting on each meal. Then 1 time a week they have a multivitimin dusting. On the time they have the multivitimin dusting do the have a calcium dusting also. Finaly what else will i have to buy for the enclosure. Lights, recomended brands etc.

thanks
Sean

I dont use the flexariums because i find it hard to keep the temperature up and spraying is a nightmare.
that size will be too big for a baby anyway.my baby is in an 18"Lx15"H and 12" D tank with a mesh lid till she grows.I have fish tank backing on 3 sides to make her feel more secure.
feeding i feed my baby twice a day dusting with Calypso calcium powder every feed and one day a week i dust with Nutrobal multi vitamin powder and dont use Calypso that day

you will need a spot bulb for basking for a baby they only need it around 75deg F at the basking area you will need a dimmer stat to control the temperatures and then you will need a 5% uv tube and starter or a compact uv bulb
i am rushing out now but if you need any other advice just ask

The Exo terras on there are great.thats what i have my panther in but i will have to upgrade him into something else when he grows as the biggest one is only 60x45x60cm there is a company called viv builders that make wooden vivs and a friend of mine has some for her chams and they look fantastic

It depends what size your planning on getting

in the UK you can get them anything from 12x12x12" up to 24x18x24" it also depends what size cham you get as small babies cant go in a big viv

you will have to start with a small viv but then move up to something bigger as it grows even yemens sold as babys can be anything from a couple of inches in size up to about 5" so it depends what you find for sale.
If you are looking for a small species of chameleon have you considered a carpet chameleon? they stay small and can live in pairs

i have had a look at the carpets and i want one. Are they hard to get ahold of???

no they are not that hard to get hold of infact there is some available at the moment

hope you dont mind me asking but have you had experiance of other reptiles as chameleons are not a beginers species

I had a corn snake and my uncle has boas and bearded dragons, he is always around anyway.
What size tank/cage will be good for the adult carpet???
Thanks

you could keep a pair of carpets in an 18" (45cm) exo terra
i am actually considering Carpets as my next species

The exo terra 45cmx45cmx45cm you mean???
OK is it true they only live for 3 years?
And do they have to live in pairs?
Am i correct in saying they need a heat lamp and a uv/uvb light, do you have any reliable brands?
Also what wattage of heat lamp and how many % uvb?
sorry about all the questions i want to make sure i am prepared for whats to come.

Thanks
sean

yes a 45 x45x45 is the 18" one they can live on there own but Chameleons are very high maintanence reptiles. You cant go away and leave them like you can other reptiles as they need to be sprayed.
i would say probably a 40w spot bulb would be more than enough but you will also need a dimmer stat for the bulb.then you will need a 5% uv and starter.I average about £150-£200 for all the equipment for a cham
then the cham on top of that.you also need to change the UV tube every 6 months

I dont go on holiday. I wouldent leave my dogs here either. If i ever did (theoretically(sp)) My uncle would look after him. but i have never and never will (probs) go on holiday.

Is a bulb and the 'starter' all you need for the light to work?
Is the starter the power supply?

Thanks
Sean
