Can someone please help me? I really confused about the difference in cichlids. New World, Old World, Malawi, African! do they all need to be kept seperate?
and how can you tell the difference?

So does that mean there are 4 different types of cichlids?

yes, cichlids can be found in 4 parts of the world, However there are manyvarying species found in each location which can be very different in shape, size and overall temperament,

African (Old World)
Lake Malawi
-mbuna
-Peacocks
-haps
Lake Tanganyika
Lake Victoria
West African Cichlids such as Kribensis and Jewel Cichlids

Central and South American (New Worlds)
These can range from peaceful dwarfs such as apistos and rams, to medium sized semi aggressive species like Firemouths and Blue Acaras and then larger aggressive species like Jaguar and Texas Cichlids

Madagascan
Asian
