I have heard that feeding my fish vegatables is good for them so I have been out an bought a brocolli but what do I do with it???

Do I feed my fish the round green parts at the top or the stem parts??? I have no idea what names they give to different parts of a brocolli!! Do i need to cook it first?

Also, What other vegetables are good to give fish? I tried peas but none of the fish seemed interested at all!

Thanks

never heard of giving fish brocolli!

mine eat peas (boiled then peeled and mashed up a bit)
cucumber (soaked in boiled water from the kettle first)
and they can have courgette too (prepped in the same way as cucumber, can be a bit messy in the water though)
also heard that they can have spinich but i don't know how you prep that.

It was somebody on here yesterday who said brocolli but I just don't know what to do with it!

I have no idea about veggies but My fish love banana and apple
Chop into (fish)bite sized pieces, drop them in and watch the fun.

Which fish eat this? at the moment i am trying all different types of frozen foods to see which is best. Bloodworm is high up there with mosquito larvae a near second.

Im trying this out on my zebra Danios

any other suggestions on what i could try?

Kev

My bristle nose plecs love broccoli, i break a stem off, poke a plant weight through and drop it in, they suck it until it turns white. You could blanch it first but it won't last as long in the water.

i never thought about feeding broccoli, bananas or apple!! might try that! which fish like the bananas and apple?

you can feed all sorts of green veg, like catxx said you must slightly cook the peas (just to soften them) then peel them, they break into two, and you can either drop them in in these two bits, or slightly mash it.. depends on the fish, my silver dollars just take a whole half and eat it, but the torpedos and tetras like to eat the little bits which sink when you squash the pea.

with cucumber, you dont need to cook it, i just wash it under some tap water, slice it in half, so you expose the biggest number of seeds (we only feed about two inchs at a time) and then weigh it down, the clown loach, bala sharks and plecs especially love this.

we also feed them lettuce, you can blanche, but it isn't totally necessary, we have a clip which holds the lettuce in place. i think you prepare the spinach in the same way, but i havne't tried spinach yet!

enjoy watching them.. it's great fun! :p

My plecs love sweet potato, Kribs have a bit of a munch on it as well.

I simply par boil it in the microwave, attach a weight and put it in the tank. Its a bit more stable than Zucchini etc and the plecs have to rasp at it a bit more, but it doesn't half bulk them up.

Got the tip from my lfs who use it to feed up any plecs they get delivered and are underweight.

does it just have to be sweet potato.. or can it be any kind of potato? doesn't it dissipate in the water? or do you under cook it enough that it is still hard (ish)? :)

I have only used sweet potato, couldn't comment on any other types.

I prepare it like this. Cut a 1cm thick slice. Place it in a coffee mu and then pour boiled water from the kettle over it.

I then place cling film over the top of the mug and put it in the microwave on full power (800w) for three minutes.

Be careful when you take it out as the mug will be very hot. I then leave the cold tap running into the mug until it cools. Take out the seet potato and make sure it is cool enough for the fish, attach a weight and plop it in the tank. It can stay in there for a few days without fouling the water (although mine just lasts the night normally).

Which fish eat this?

which fish like the bananas and apple?

All danio species seem to like banana and apple, except the smaller species
D.erythromicron, D.choprae & D.nigrofasciatus. Most of the botias I keep will eat it as well.
My buenos aries tetras like it too.

I found out about the apple on-line somewhere, but can't remember where.
The banana was an accident, I was eating one whilst feeding them, a bit broke off and fell
into the tank. Before I could remove it they had grabbed it and were fighting over it

lol good job it was a banana and not something else! I'm going to try out a few of the things listed above so I shall let you know how I get on!

I've fed broccoli, the green fluffy flower parts, slightly boiled. Went down well as far as I remember. Also spinach and chard lightly boiled. The great favourite is peas though.
