Here's an idea. Get her a small fishtank (with gift reciept of course). For me recieving a fishtank is like getting a blank canvas!!!
A good salt or freshwater tank would be the 8g Biocube (depending on how much they are).
Another cute idea (IMO) is that you could get her a small tank (NOT too small!) and a betta (siamese fighting fish). A 5g tank should be sufficient and finding a pink, purple or red betta should be a cinch. They are quite easy to take care of when not in those horrid bowls and have a lot of personality. If I had to pick the 'funniest' fish I have owned it would definitely be my betta.
Furthermore it is something she could keep on her desk or in her bedroom. And they live for about 3-5 years. Additionally you still have the 'blank canvas' factor... just provide the tank kit, heater and gravel and she can plant it / decorate it as a pet project.
