tried to a search on UV sterlizers on this site and couldn't find anything. are they useful, do they work, waste of money, etc.? they are adverstised as being able to kill fungus, parasites, and algae that are free floating in the water. can they really prevent the spread of diseases? they are expensive but cheaper than endless bottles of ich treatments, etc.

Yes they do kill free swimming parasites / free floating algae, etc. Agreed they are expensive, but I think they're worth it, although you'll never know what diseases you WOULD have got if you hadn't had it! I used to keep marines and never had an outbreak of whitespot on the tank with the UV; on a tank without one I had whitespot go through all my fish. That's not proof that it works of course! - but if you can afford one they're a good precaution.
