Hi, I've been doing some maintenance on my rio 180
And did a full water stats test, well full means the 4 test I have I did a 60% water change as well

PH 6/6.5 ppm
Ammonia 0 ppm
Nitrite 0 ppm
Nitrates 10 ppm
I tested the water before I did the water change, I've all ways had a ph of 7 ppm
So I did a check on my tap water and found that my ph level is now 6 ppm out of the tap
Is this any thing to worrie about?
Will every thing be ok at 6 ish ppm?

Thanks

What size tank, filter, inhabitants do you have?
Has it always been 6.0 out of the tap?
Do you have a KH/GH test kit? (although isn't Yorkshire water notoriously hard?)
Have you added anything recently?

Terry.

Tank is rio 180lts
It's always been 7 ppm out of the tap
Added nothing
Fluval 306 filter
rummy nose tetra x 8
copper harlequin x 14
bronze corydoras x 6 I think
apistogramma cacatuoides x 1 sadly it did not like it 2 m8ts

No I don't have a KH/GH test kit
But last time it was tested a LFS it was
kh 4dkh = 71.6ppm
gh 5dgh = 89.5ppm based on 17.9 x dkh/dgh

Did you wait 24 hours before doing the tap water pH test? If not, it is not valid and you should sit a sample of tap water for 24 hours before testing the pH.

the water in Harrogate (also Yorkshire) is soft. It's normally PH 7 -ish. Going to check mine now as I did a huge water change this morning and now I'm worried ... brb

mine's coming up at about PH 7.

what part of Yorkshire are you in Spurry?

Does this really make any difference, kittykat? My fishless cycle was riddled with PH crashes, not once did i leave any tap water stand for 24hrs (i presume it's something to do with the chlorine/chloramine and it's evaporation)? Should i have done it also?

Terry.

I also don't see how allowing water to stand would affect the PH Terry but I could be wrong. My ph comes out the tap at around 7 and is always around 6.8 - 7 in the tank.

Spurry, have you added any bogwood recently? I added some and it dropped my ph to about 6 for a while. It's sorted itself now though

yeah need to test your tap water at least 24 hours from tap as it can change.

I'm in Leeds , no bog wood added, infact I've not added anything for
Months apart from water and prime, I've been checking around the net
And is seems my stock is ok at PH of 6/7 ppm
So I'm going to keep a good eye on it good job I went
To specsavers last week and got me new bins lol

:good: sounds good, I know when mine dropped the fish were okay. I'm guessing Leeds probably has a different water source than here in Harrogate which would explain the difference in ph.

Good luck with it anyway :)

Tap water needs to be stood for 24 hours because of dissolved CO[sub]2[/sub] (which makes the pH appear lower than it really is), although I have seen a few cases where tap water pH actually rose after 24 hours!

Tank water should be tested immediately on taking it, as you want to know the conditions in the tank itself :good:

None of your fish will mind the more acidic water (the cory's and coppers might actually like it more!)

If you want to breed your cory's, now could be the perfect time!.
Use the slightly more acidic water, put it in the fridge for a few hours and do a water change with that (with a little sprinkler)

They will think the rain season started and maybe start to breed :good:

checked the tank water just now so 24hrs after being in the tanks it:

PH 6 ppm
Ammonia 0 ppm
Nitrite 0 ppm
Nitrates 5 ppm

Ye Spurry our water is very soft and so it's quite common for the pH to be low. I wouldn't worry about it. I don't ;)

ps, didn't realise you were so close Akasha! ;) nice to find local peeps!
