Joule is now sitting on 4 eggs and looks like she's done laying. I candled them today, and guess what? TWO ARE FERTILE!!!!!!!!!!
I'm guessing it will be 16-17 days before the first hatches, I'm not sure exactly when these were laid because after the first two (the infertile ones, I candled those earlier) I was trying to disturb her as little as possible and didn't check for eggs daily.
I dunno how well you can see the veins in this pic, but you can definitely see the shadow of the yolk... very large, which along with the veins, is a sign of a fertile egg.
You can see the veins better in this smaller version
I'll probably let her raise them this time and see how it goes. I have read that as long as you handle them a lot there's very little difference between a baby raised by the parents and one that has been hand-raised, so we'll see
Grab those babies when their eyes open and cuddle em and scratch em to bits lol , they will love you for it. I used to tickle mine under their chins and they just ate it up. Unless the mother goes nuts , she may have ur finger for a snack , if she gets too upset I'd leave them. Unless ur prepared to hand feed.
I have too many pet projects. I also breed Orange Breasted Zebra Finches. A new mutation that people are desperate to get here in the UK
Fertile eggs are always exciting , lets hope since it's her first clutch that she is a good mummy. How old is she?
I'm a pic freak so I thought I'd share some of mine.
She's a little over a year old, and she is being a great mommy so far
She is the most even-tempered parrotlet I've ever seen and doesn't even try to bite me when I shoo her off the eggs (which I try to avoid doing, but I wanted to candle them). She opens her mouth and threatens, but then hops out of the nestbox like a good little lady and waits patiently until I am done and return the eggs. She has been incubating the eggs well, and her mate Petri has been eating a wider variety of foods he normally wouldn't touch to keep her well fed, in addition to attacking me every time I go near the cage, but that's pretty normal for him.
For all of my parrot like birds I used to bake cornbread with pinto beans and corn and great northern beans in em or black eyed peas and my birds would tear it up! Try him on that , he might snarl his nose up at first but when he gets a taste for it they love it , it makes a good food for babies too if u add suplements. Good luck
