As an engineer, I was taught the main principle of engineering, which I believe applies here, is KISS: Keep it simple, Stupid.

Another good line that fits with carpentry and machining is "measure twice, cut once.".

We want to keep it simple but nature's a complex system. Once we put it in a glass box, it gets crazy.

There are a lot of fish and a lot of water types that can let you do fewer water changes, if you stock correctly. In my soft water with the more delicate species I like, once a month would be a disaster. My killies would handle it, but the other fish wouldn't. In harder water with different species, I could go every 2 or 3 weeks. I probably wouldn't because routines keep it simple.

Measure twice, cut once but make sure you have the right materials for it...

I have another unpopular opinion I like to discuss.

Does it bother anyone that when you help a poster with their fish issue, you never get the courtesy of a final outcome? I wish we could hear from posters if their fish issue was resolved based on the help they received in a reply.

I know this happens a lot with new members who just jump in to get free expert help, but you never hear back from them if their fish survived or not.

@Fishfunn Yeah, I get that.
It would be good to hear the outcome, as what if we are confidently giving bad advice? We need the feedback.

It would be nice to be able to say "Well, I solved that, didn't I?" except the didn't I looms large on some of the questions. We try our best, but we depend on the info shared with us.

Can be difficult to add an outcome. I had a post on here a while ago about fish dying from injuries from a pychotic Bristlenose, but other things also seemed to be at play in terms of some of the fish dying.

I tried numerous things suggested from the other things at play perspective, also got rid of the Bristlenose and it was a proven monster.

I agreed to wait 2 weeks without deaths before adding new fish. Once I did add more, a further 2 weeks later I lost a load more in a sudden spirt, 2 weeks after that I lost another one.

Now I have not had a loss of any fish for about a month now. But still not sure what helped or if anything did.
