Undergravel filter help

Yes, I think that you would since there aren't any uplift tubes for the powerfilter to sit in when you remove the UGF. If you get a external powerfilter such as a Penguin Biowheel with an appropriate GPH rate for a 55 gallon tank you probably won't need anymore aeration. When I removed my UGF I took my powerhead back to my local pet store and they gave me a credit. I ended up buying an air pump, hose and a decorative airstone. The fish seem to really enjoy the bubbles created by this. Plus the bubbles add further surface disruption which I read is important in terms of oxygenation of the tank.
