Hi...one of my professional journals used to have a column called, "How I Do It", or descriptions of shortcuts to do a job or ways to save money. I thought it might be interesting to start a thread for new nano-ers listing some tricks/tools of the trade that people use to perform maintenance on their tank or, how to save a few bucks or little discussed necessities that eventually are needed. Here are a few to start:

1) Turkey baster...great for floating cyanobacteria off LR or substrate, blowing debris off of live rock or some use it to feed corals

2) A surface skimmer for the Nano Cube, or, Doriftu's cassette case cover.... See his locally famous thread:

http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/showthread...oriftu+cassette

3) Save on chemicals...eg, when testing for nitrates with AP's test kit, use half the volume (5ccs) and 5 drops from bottles 1 and 2 instead of 10

4) Epoxy putty...not mentioned often, but, you may need this to hold your coral frags onto your LR when you start adding inverts. Helps keep turbos from moving them.

Thanks. SH

Someone suggested trading frags with friends instead of endangering reefs paying for expensive corals at the lfs.
