Specialists in unusual fish and plants.
I was recommended this guy Steve by my other halfs boss who used to make his aquarium cabinets and supply his tanks. Guess where I got my stand and tank - my other halfs boss.
Steve has reserved fish for me, he even managed to correctly sex my rams GB.

I think there are one or two shops I have visited and forgot, when I remember I will give those aswell.

Some more shops in Ayrshire, Scotland.

Troon Pets & Aquaria
3c, Church St,
Troon,
Ayrshire KA10 6AU
Tel: 01292 318417

Small shop with about 16 tanks split 50/50 cold / tropical. Mostly common fish in stock - Danios, Neons, Guppies, Mollies, Platies occasional Bettas etc. The tanks are clean if somewhat heavily stocked, but fatalities are rare from what I have seen. The owner is fairly knowledgable and I've seen him suggest alternatives to inappropriate fish when people ask. The other two staff don't have much fish related knowledge in my experience.

Pretty cramped shop, 'tho once you reach the tank area it's not too bad. The tanks are clean and well lit for the most part, saw a few dead fish unfortunately and even when pointed out the staff seemed unconcerned. Asked one of the staff to identify a fish for me and she was unable to do so (Still don't know what it was, lol)

Pet Shop (Kilmarnock) Ltd

Kilmarnock,

This shop has a great reputation from bygone years for fish, however it seems to have drastically reduced the amount of the shop given over to fish now, only maybe 10 small tanks or so. Old faithfulls for choices - guppies, mollies, neons. There are a couple of tiny marine display tanks in the setup that are nice to look at. The tanks are all very clean and well lit, cramped shop conditions make it a bit awkward to see the fish if there is more than one person looking.

Staff - ? I never actually managed to get hold of a staff member during my one visit, the place certainly seems to be busy.

Pets at Home Ltd

Yes it's a Pets@home. The tanks are clean enough and well lit. Occasionally see casualties in tanks tho they're always gone by the next time I drop in. They have a fairly nice selection of fish, nothing outstanding but those fish available seem pretty healthy in general. Prices are good for the most part too. The staff seem somewhat lacking tho, asking one to reccomend a tank for a betta and she immediately suggests a hex shaped tank with a mirrored back :/ Talking to a different guy in the shop today he told of the awesome marine tank he had in his livingroom, yet seemed to have no concept of cycling a tank when I explained why we weren't *buying* today.

Precious Pets - Ayr, Irvine, Saltcoats

Cheap prices for hardware, not all of them sell fish and the ones that do so are quite happy to throw bettas in with tiger barbs  Nearly every tank I looked at contained a casualty and the staff seemed more interested in reading the paper or painting their nails than answering questions.

Variety - 2 (Only a few tanks in even the ones with fish)
Quality - 3 (Half the fish seemed to have some kind of swim bladder problem... )

Acorn Pet Centres Ltd
Unit 5,
Riverway Retail Park,
Riverway,
Irvine,
Ayrshire KA12 8AY
Tel: 01294 204250

Easy to get to, easy to park at. The tanks are well lit and I often see a staff member tending to them. The fish selection may not be outstanding but there are sometimes unusual species available. The only let down is the staff, I'm starting to think that is the norm in "chain stores".

Variety - 6 (They had some really nice Gouramis and Kribensis when I was in last week.)
Quality - 6 (The fish seem generally healthy, any casualties are rapidly dealt with, even had a staff member slap a "not for sale" sign on a tank when a fish appeared to have Ich.)
Staff - 4 (There is one girl who seems to know her stuff (maybe a 7 for her) but the rest of them drag the total way down...)

Acorn Pet Centres Ltd
12-22, St. Andrews St,
Kilmarnock,
Ayrshire KA1 3EY

This shop has an even bigger selection than the Irvine store. The place is easy to get to and park at. The tanks are perhaps slightly less well kept, certainly well lit. There seems to be one staff member who deals with the aquarium side of things, when she's on things are well maintained. If she's not in there are nearly always a casualty or 2 among the tanks that sit there all day.

Variety - 6
Quality - 4 (Due to the sometimes lacklustre dealing with casualties)
Staff - 3 (6/7 if the knowledgable lass is on.)

Pets Aquarium & Fishing Tackle
124 Main Street,
Prestwick, KA9 1PB
01292 477863

I remember going to this shop 30 years ago when I was a kid and being fascinated with all the fish in the fish room. Today the fish room is still there, pretty much exactly as it was back then, only older. The fish selection is great, many oddballs and unusual examples are available - Huge Catfish ? Full grown Pirahna ? The tanks could be cleaner and better lit, but generally the fish seem healthy enough. The fish room just feels a bit dingy now as if it could use a lick of paint and some new lights :)

Variety - 9
Quality - 7 (Haven't bought any fish from him this time around, but I think I will sometime soon.)
Staff - 8 (The owner is very knowledgable in my experience, his dad started the shop and he's been involved with it for a long time.)

And finally for now..

Dobbies Garden World

This is in my opinion the best shop around here from a first impressions point of view. The area is spacious, the tanks are clean and well lit displaying some gorgeous fish that make you want to take them all home ! They sell cold/tropical and marine fish with a marine display that I could stand and watch for hours - those fish are so pretty ! The staff are semi knowledgable and one of them seems to be well above average, assessing which tank mates are suitable with what you have already. The less knowledgable staff will easily admit if they don't know something and go and get the answer for you if they can.

Quite a small shop, very nicely laid out. Not a great deal of tanks, and probably half of them seem to be cichilids. Some nice specimens tho and seem to be in very good condition. The owner said he could try and order in specific fish if there was something specific I was after.

Variety - 5 (All fresh water, nearly all tropical. about 50% cichilids)

Quality - 9 (All the fish look to be in great health, never seen a dead fish in these tanks.)

Staff - 8 (Very friendly, Not really chatted to him much but he does seem to know his stuff.)

*edit got two of the addresses mixed up.

Can I add Woodford aquatics please?

I have shopped in a few places over the years since I started to keep fish but I always end up coming back here. The staff are great, very helpful and willing to spend time with you looking at different fish.

He has many regular customers and the shop always has a nice atmostsphere.

so marks out of ten

variety - 9/10 you can mostly get any kind of fish and if they don't have it they will happily order it for you.

Quality - 8/10 I have never been unhappy with fish I have got there. They look after them very well.

Staff - 8/10 I think they are fab!

they will also have custom made tanks put together for regular customers and have a good supply of live food.

And I LOVE the front of the shop I think its brilliant. Its a shame you can't see the whole thing

GFG

They've been mentionned before in this thread but here's my experience of a few in Leicester:

Friends In Soggy Homes, Birstall Leicester
Variety - 8/10 very nice selection of tropical/ coldwater although they didn't have any of the zebra loaches i was after recently :X They are presently rebuilding the marine section
Quality - 10/10 All fish look tip top, very well kept tanks
Staff - 10/10 Very helpful and knowledgable. I went during the day so it wasn't overly busy
Recommended

Ocean Commotion, Clarendon park road, Leicester
Variety - 9/10 They have pretty much everything you could want in tropical, a large amount of cichlids, plecs, puffers and even a red tailed catfish once. They have excellent coldwater and an increasingly large marine selection too
Quality - 7/10 - Not seen any dead fish yet but a few tanks have looked a bit jaded, mainly with livebearers. Saying that they do like to overstock...
Staff - 7/10 They know their stuff but they do like to shift fish - one recommended me a clown loach for a 15gallon tank
Recommended

Pets At Home, St Georges park, Leicester
Variety - 4/10 Nothing past bog standard stuff here
Quality - 2/10 I've seen dead fish, many sick fish and i've bought 5 Danios from here causing an outbreak of bacterial disease in my tank taking a couple of my fish with it
Staff - 2/10 Only 1/2 staff here know a thing about fish keeping and the rest are obviously on sales targets. They are also often busy

Maidenhead Aquatics in cambridge (UK) (>>link<<) that have already bbeen mentioned are (from what i have found) the Best in cambridge, they know what they are talking about, have a lovely veriaty of fish from gold fish =>pond fish to => tropical. No marine fish though but if memory servs me right one of the staff members owns his own marine tank and used to work in huntingdon garden center with there marine so adviceis always on hand. there tank setup is by faar the cleanist, and most efffective in this area (apart from huntingdon who are on par with maidenhead), i have only ever seen about 3-4 dead fish in the tanks (one of my ways of judging a shop). They know what they are talking about when it comes to what fish you can have together and cannot and have there tanks setup accordingly. community fish on the left and non-community (or Evil fish for the misses reffrence on the right [note they are also a good laugh]).

They offer free water tests (one of the only places in the area that do, and a full test, not just no3 and ph). Genery heasetent to sell you fish untill the setup is just right offering weekly tests for new setups (great for the noobs [i think im just comming out that stage hehe]) and are willing to spend time to help you determin what if anything has gone wrong with the tank and are not afraid to say if it is you (aka over-feeding) as some of the other places sometimes do.

They also have a gerat range of stoke, and if they haent got it they will try and get it in for you, and even fish if they can.

they have many ongoing projects instore like tanks set up, and fish breading (recent joy being there lovely Discus have just hatched)

I rate this store 10/10 in all departments as they have been The best i have ever been to in my area.

Never let me down, always offered an above service.

sorry its a bit on the long sided, but i feel pashernet about my LFS hehe,

Variety - 10 good number of fish, and a nice mix for everyone from the beginer to the expert
Quality - 10 Fish are all Healthy, Great vidrent colers and setup is stunning yet still simple and effective
Staff - 10 the sort of people you wouldnt mind taking for a Drink (if you wish), hellpfull, friendly and a good laugh. also know what they are talking about and not afraid to admit if they dont, at witch point they get there books out and find out for you

thank you darv

There is a nice variety here for another small shop attached to a garden centre in Ulverston. The only let down is I find the guy very condecending. He seems obsessed with telling you that the fish you are looking at will either eat all the tankmates or get eaten. I am not saying this isn't true but when I bought some cories and neons off him he warned me the cories would see the neons as food. They live together perfectly well though. I am guessing he just likes to scare new aquarists, which wouldn't bother me but he doesn't seem to offer any alternatives when pointing problems out. I can see he has good ethics and would never sell you a fish too large for your aquaria or sell you an oscar to live with your neons.

This is our LFSAFH (LFS away from home). We were going to buy a new aquarium here but there were problems with the suppliers which was out of their hands. They have a nice selection of fishy friends and the girls do have a good knowledge of fish but some of the statements they make seem a bit misguided. The prices are nice for both fish and equipment. The girls will always check with a more experienced member of staff if they are unsure which is always a bonus. I Can't fault them for not knowing something as long as they don't try and bluff me.

MY RATINGS

VARIETY - 7

NOT THE WIDEST VARIETY I HAVE SEEN,SOME DECENT PLECS AND MOST OF THE USUAL SUSPECTS BUT NO DEAD FISH ON DISPLAY AND ALL THE TANKS ARE VERY CLEAN. EVERY FISH HAS A SMALL PIECE OF INFORMATION INCLUDING PICTURE SIZE PH TEMP ETC AND TEMPERAMENT.

QUALITY - 9

EXCELLENT HAVE SO FAR BOUGHT 24 FISH AND OTHER STUFF NONE OF WHICH HAVE DIED OR HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH.

STAFF - 10

REALLY HELPFULL AND KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT ALL FISH THEY HAVE AND OTHERS THEY CAN ORDER (TAKE NOTE FISH ALIVE, DURHAM), 48 HR RETURN SERVICE FOR FISH SOLD.

TO SUM UP

A REALLY GOOD SMALL SHOP WITH GREAT STAFF, I HAVE BEEN TO QUITE A FEW OTHERS IN THE TYNE,DURHAM AREA ALL OF WHICH ARE NOT AS GOOD ESPECIALLY IN TERMS OF SERVICE

NAME AND SHAME SECTION

[/b]FISH ALIVE,DURHAM [/b]

NO DETAILS ON THE TANKS ABOUT PARTICULAR FISH JUST COMMON NAMES, WHEN I ASKED ABOUT A PARTICULAR FISH WAS MET WITH "DONT KNOW"

[/b]PETER BARRETTS GARDEN CENTRE ,GOSFORTH[/b]

TOO MANY DEAD FISH IN THE TANKS CAN NOBODY SCOOP THEM OUT BEFORE OPENING TIME AND WHO WANTS TO BUY FISH FROM A SHOP WHICH KILLS THEM?

[/b]DOBBIES GARDEN CENTRE, PONTELAND AND BIRTLEY

PONTELAND IS QUITE IMPRESSIVE, STAFF VERY HELPFUL PLENTY OF INFORMATION AVAILABLE ON TROPICAL AND MARINE FISH BUT A LITTLE EXPENSIVE. BIRTLEY HAS VIRTUALLY NO TROPICAL FISH AND A FEW GOLDFISH.

WILL ADD TO THIS IN COMING WEEKS

Very knowledgeable, if you ask the right question you will get the right answer. If you dont ask any questions you will obviously get what you ask for (sometimes leading to putting the wrong type of fish in the wrong environment). They are not to know what size tank you have unless you tell them.

Excellent pricing and always have promotions on Fish and Hardware.
