Well I tend to travel around the area looking at lfs, it's my break away from motherhood and the home! LOL! I've already commented on Wharf which in my opinion gets 10 out of 10 on all aspects! Even the younger members of staff are very knowldegeable and helpful which is nice to see! They also opened their marine section over Xmas which is pretty darn amazing! Oh and they have a reptile section now as well, not of interest to me but pop in to have a look at the creepy crawlies every now and then!

Another one in the Derbyshire area is Blue Lagoon which is based at Carnfield Hall Garden Centre, Alfreton, marks as below:

Variety - 7 They have your usual bread and butter breeds, they did have a good selection of marines but the coldwater seem to be taking over that section now... Not a place for oddballs.

Staff - 7 They're very helpful but they're after the sale a lot of the time if you don't know them, I go there quite often and chat for ages with some of the staff but sometimes their advice leaves me wondering!

Quality - 8 I can't ever remember seeing a dead fish in there and the only time I've seen an ill fish was on there current discus which were brought in from the supplier with white spot! They were absolutely covered! Other than that though, never had a problem with the stock I've bought from there.

There are more but I'll leave at that for now!

I used to shop here a lot but they had to close their marine section downstairs and now they haven't got much marine stuff at all. Quite a few tropical tanks though and all very clean.

As far as Coral Reef is concerned I will never set foot inside that place again. The lady owner is more than "huffy" she is a nightmare. They sold me a fish with finrot and when I took it back to them after it died (3 days after I got it) they said it was my water! I took water in for them to test and it was fine yet still refused to give me a refund on the basis that if it was a problem with the fish it would have died the day I got it. Do they know anything about marine fish at all? There are frequently dead fish in the tanks and they haven't a clue about the species of fish that they sell. They sold me a magenta dottyback by telling me it was a strawberry basslet  That was in my earlier less knowledgable days.

Now this thread would be really useful if it was a seperate page that allowed us to view by area - I wanted to see what everyone else had put about Shirley Aquatics as well and have just had to go through 7 pages - that would be really useful if we could browse by area or search the list

I am planning on doing this when there are plenty of entryies :) I will wait until it gets to 10 pages then i will compile it... unless anyone wants to do it for me now, although its my thread so dont steal all the credit mmmkay? :p

World of water - Timperly

Variety - 7 (seem to have a lot, but were out of some stuff last time I was there)

Quality - 9 All clean, not seen a dead fish, look all in good shape. - I havnt seen their new section though

Pets Beauty Salon & Aquarium - Beech road Chorlton - try this out mike5531 and see what you think

Staff - 8 (its mostly the manager who you talk to, he's willing to order stuff in for you, is freindly and knows his stuff)

Variety - 7 ( quite a lot of different stuff, but is a small shop, so doesnt accomadate loads)

Quality - 9 ( All fish look really healthy, and mine from there have done well, my only problem is there was some sort of plec that I thought was too big for the tank it was in)

This is my lfs. It's OK for non livestock but I don't really buy fish there anymore. Quality is poor. Often dead fish in tanks and many visibly carry disease.

good old fasioned service 10+ :D :D :D

Its owend by steve punchard, (famous for his discus)

He's updated the hole shop since he bought it, new discus, marines, plant and tropical displays, 5 large tanks with odd balls both fresh and salt water, all the latest equipment, tank displays upstairs in the new cafe. nice

the worst in the area is pendle aquatics in colne, most of the fish i saw whernt in the best of condistions, the only ones that where any good where his rays, but they where in to smaller tank.

Maidenhead aquatics newport (Crosey)

Variety - 8
Quality - 6 (tetras had white spot and molly had velvet)
Staff - 10, very friendly :p

*edit* staff - variable, there is a really nice guy there who explains everything etc etc .... and there is another guy who is an absolute pratt, who lectured for and my boyfriends mum on fish food, water conditions and how ich is similar to the common cold in humans, he told me 'i know what im doing, my fish are the best, our water is the best' blah blah blah, anyway he is a pratt :<

Pets @ home, Cwmbran

After my betta was attacked by the tetra, i took them back to maidenhead aquatics, and bought another one from pets at home, he looks so healthy, and seems to be getting on fine with the other fish so, fingers crossed, if everything goes ok i shall be buying my fish from there in future :)

Just re-visted World of water timperly - at first sight - very impressed, lots of tanks a marine section and stuff.

But it seems they have bitten off more then they can chew, with a few of the tanks having one or more dead fish in, though they looked recently decesed and one of the guys said it was just more than they could handle.

Other than that looked nice, presentable, nice selection, different sections for lake malawi cichlids keep fish in quarantine for a week.

I then went to timperly aquatics.

MUCH better than I imagined, not an ill fish or anything and a massive selection, could even get terrapins! Guy really seemed to know his stuff, and was a nice marine section with some really attractive fish!

so

Timperly Aquatics

Variety - 9 had nearly everythin, but was out of RTBs and ADFs had a load of ACF's though - albinos, also had terrapins, oscars etc.

Quality - 10 Couldnt fault anything, all seemed to be in order - and it wasnt sterile like other places, it had that nice smell of water with good bacteria :)

Staff - 10 Very freindly, helpful and knowledgeable, didnt try to push a sale or anythin.

I'd reccomend a visit.
