They have a new Aquatic centre which opened a couple of months ago. Beautifully clean tanks and healthy fish. Not sure how many tanks there are exactly but they stock Brackish, Malawi's, Tropical's, Cold water and Pond fish. They also have a few 'oddball' things which are interesting! Good stock of plants and accessories too. The staff are very knowledgeable, know all about cycling and Marine (which they don't yet stock) and will advise on which fish are suitable for your tank.

They also sell Bactinettes if anyone can't get hold of them.

Living Death.... sorry world
armley, leeds, yorkshire

paws for thought (think that's what it's called!)
york rd, leeds, yorkshire

just found this one but first impressions are good
Variety - 8 had some nice fancy plecs which always impresses me! had a small but nice looking marine section, had flame angels which are just my favourite fish ever so that kept me smiling!
Quality - 8 we went in first thing in the morning (literally got there 5 mins before they opened so waited around to be let in when they were opening up) and there were a couple of dead fish in some tanks... but the bloke there was going roudn taking water samples from tanks to do tests and all dead fish were removed and tanks looking good when we went back a couple of hrs later that day
Service - 10 excellent, I was really impressed with the bloke there, they had a tank labeled as having a gold nugget plec but I couldn't see it so asked if it had been sold, he said yes it had but said if you like fancy plecs have a look at these and showed me some other really nice ones, ended up getting a lovely big fat royal for 30. Fair enough he was trying to get a sale but he did seem to know what he was on about and I asked about it's suitability with tank mates/sizes etc and he answered honestly.

I'll definately be going back there next week when my next tank needs stocking, will update my listings when I've been a few times and got a better idea.

 I went Paws for Thought and they were selling 'Disco Fish' that were obviously dyed. I'll never go back.

On a lighter note, The Living World is now well and truly shut down!!!

Haverfordwest (Wales)

Creamston Aquatics

Variety 8 - Had quite a lot of fish, including many coldwater and pond fish. Quite a few tropicals, but no rare types. I was also dissapointed at the small number of platy's and no sign of any endlers. They did have quite a large variety of marine fish as well.

Quality 8 - The tanks were clean, and only saw one dead fish in the 50+ tank. Unfortunately one of the bigger tanks, which must have had around 40 red platy's, had some sort of internal parasite infection, and quite a few of the fish had these, and no sign of this tank being in quarantine. Prices were reasonable too.

Staff 8 - Didn't really talk to the staff that much, but they seemed perfectly friendly, and caught the fish that i wanted very quickly.

Great to see this thread going strong, i need to colate it all into a properly layed out post.

The ones I actually use have been posted already so won't repeat.

SUPREME ANIMAL FOODS
324-328, Lewisham High St, London, SE13 6JZ
Tel: 020 8690 7929

Variety 8 - Good for small store, coldwater, tropical and marine and have larger fish such as stingrays

Quality 2 - each time I go is worse, too many dead fish, too many fish kept with unsuitable tankmates

Service 3 - OK basic knowledge, not good for stocking/compatability advice. Can't take criticism when definately in the wrong

Pets at Home Ltd
100, Blackheath Rd, London, SE10 8DA
Tel: 020 8469 9130

Variety 4 - keep staple aquarium fish and little more. Occasionally have "limited edition fish" such as dwarf puffers

Quality 0 - last time I went there were dead and dying fish in every tank. The state of the tanks was actually disturbing.

Service - 1 poor knowledge/training. Give apalling advice on stocking, don't know the names of fish/diets/sizes. The labels actually tell you more than the staff can. When asked questions they lie if they don't know the answer, and rather unconvincingly

Premier Pet Supplies
Unit 41, Rye Lane, London, SE15 5ER
Tel: 020 7639 2525

Variety 1 - small indoor market shop with four large tanks. 1 goldfish (commons & fancy), two regular aquarium fish (platies, mollies, guppys etc), 1 cichlids

Quality - 5 - not seen a dead fish or noticeably ill one but conditions don't look great and fish are very average and often very overstocked

Service 6 - not good on knowledge on goldfish, better on cichlids and cycling. Seen them refuse to sell fish due to overstocking/imcompatibily on more than one occasion. Friendly and helpful, not overly knowledgeable but better than a lot. Smoke in the shop (but presumably not anymore).

East Ham Aquatics
146, High St South, London, E6 3RW
Tel: 0208 4703600

Variety 6 - not bad not great.

Quality - 5 - OK, not great

Service - 3 - gave me very bad advice, and customer service levels were bad too.

Glovers Aquatics - Fenton, Stoke on Trent

A very complacent store whose prices are creeping towards the wrong side of value.

Stapeley Water Gardens - Nantwich, nr Crewe MY FAVE

Staff - 10 - the best I've come across

Bridgemere Garden World - Bridgemere, nr Crewe
Variety - 4
Quality - a BIG fat 0 (dead fish all over the place, would NEVER buy fish from here)
Staff - an even BIGGER fatter 0 (mainly part time workers, with no committment and even less knowledge, never seems to be any knowledgeable staff around)
Smiley rating -

Website: http://www.bridgemere.co.uk/

On the plus side, equipment is reasonably priced here although I'd rather pay more at Stapeley and get the advice thrown in.

Swallow Aquatics - East Harling (Norfolk)

Variety - 8 (marine section  made me want to set one up)
Quality - 10 (in my opinion)
Staff - 8 (Didnt buy anything but staff were giving out good advice)
Smiley Rating - :good:

This store covers a wide selection of marines, tropical, coldwater and pond fish they had some big koi, plus some tank busters that they had rehomed including a giant gourami (think it was??) They also had a reptile section and a large dry good selection if they didnt have anything they could get it for you. Probably the best on i have been too in my area even though it was an hours drive away from me. Well worth a visit especially if you are into marines.

anybody know of any in north wales??
i know Jaydee aquatics
llay

10 amazing shop!!!
hehe

Did all of these today in my search for a new tank

Dobbies Garden Centre
Lasswade, Edinburgh

Variety- 8 varies according to time of visit but good selection of all areas
quality- 6 not normally so poor but in the tropical and cold, too many dead fish left floating
Staff - 7 enough there to help but in all honesty it was quiet anyway

Pets at Home, Straiton (Edinburgh)

variety- 4 not much of much - the usual assortment of tetras, gourami's and gold-fish but little else
Quality- 6 no dead fish but tanks were manky with algae and obviously clogged filters
Staff- 7 would be a 9 if they were more available, the 2 people I spoke to incredibly helpful and very knowledgable as much as I pushed them

Pets at Home, Corstorphine (Edinburgh)

variety- 4 same as above - a basic selection of usual suspects
Quality- 6 same as above.... no dead fish but tanks were manky with algae and obviously clogged filters etc
Staff- 4 care in the community would be a compliment - shouldn't have gone to a chain pet store on a weekend - saturday staff syndrome

Aquatic Rooms, Leith (Edinburgh)

Veriety- 8 all the standard and a good selection of marine/discus and a few larger tank specimins
Quality- 9 tanks were clean, no dead fish, plenty of sculpted/planted tanks to keep the fish happy
Staff- - 9 firstly, would be a 10 if not for some bloke who appeared half drunk and working there swearing at the top of his voice in front of lots of customers (with many children) on the phone to his mate behind the till. That aside, extremely knowledgable, helpful, honest.... take out the poor first impression and cannot praise these guys enough. Great prices on livestock and tanks and so helpful you could almost think they were your best friend. Have used in the past and know they have a good reputation - for me still the only place to go in Midlothian just don't go at 5pm when they are getting fired up for a night out (well not with kids anyway)
