Uh-Oh

thanks guys, i now have two options thanks to snowflake and fat head minnow and FW fish lover.

heres 4 scenarios that might play out

1. my dad rents a small apartment in GA to start at his new job, we mail all te fish and equipment to him, and sets up tupper warer tanks. at the end of the school year me,my bro and mom drive or fly over or drive. we get in our house and set up the real tanks and move everyone again to their final spots.

lfs permission for them to ship the stuff to him
tupper ware containers and lids

2. my dad travels back and forth from CA and GA to work, and at the end of the year we rent an RV and travel across, and since im pretty sure RV's have outlets we set up tupper ware tanks for the fish while the real tanks get delivered.

tupper ware tanks and lids
blankets

3. same with my dad but instead we fly over and hopelfully well be able to take our fish and equp. with us and set up tupper ware tanks at the place well stay at.

air port permission
coolers with either heat packs or ice packs?

4. dad has apartment or he comes with us and we send the real tanks to be collected at the post office and take the fish with us in tupper ware tanks in the back of the honda, and from there we might take a week to cross since they plan on sight seeing. we feed midway just once.

some sort of outlet converter to make filters and heaters useable (do we need lights for the coral?)
blankets
some sort of way to keep tanks still
tupper ware tanks and lids

i really hope we do either 2,3,4,1 in that order that way at least from options 2-4 i can keep an eye on my fish instead of my n00b dad.

what do you guys think? just list any supplies i miss under each scenario

Hello, 2 things I saw that are potential flaws.

First - moving van, I am assuming you are thinking Uhal, I know for sure that UHal trucks DO NOT have plugs NOR cigarette lighters (for the adapter) in the back area, which means the containers will have to be in the front cab with you for that to work. As for the cigarette lighter to AC plug adaptor you can get them at any auto supply store such as Pep Boys.

Second - With the airlines, while they will allow you to have your fish in a carry on, BUT you can only carry on 2 containers per person and they MUST meet the airline size restrictions for carry ons, check with your airline on the sizes, each one is a little different. Also, you have to think that one or more of the containers holding the fish will need to be placed in the over head bin (just thinking space wise on the plane - they will NOT allow you to hold it in your lap) and the over head bin is the last place I would want to keep live fish, everything is so crammed in there you may risk the container getting squished plus if you are on a little plane for any reason then you will have to plane side check the container if it will not fit under the seat, so that could also be a problem. Finally the problem with the airlines is the "carry on restrictions for liquids", and they DO NOT MAKE EXCEPTIONS. I travelled 5 days a week with my previous job and witnessed mothers having to discard baby formula because it did not meet the "liquid carry on restrictions". These restrictions are as follows (you may know them better as 311)

All liquids must be in 3oz containers (or less)
All containers carrying liquids must be in a quart size zip top bag (no larger or they will make you check it).
One Zip top bag per traveller.

And no kidding they really really do not make exceptions on this.

You might be better off to try using Fedex or UPS to ship the fish overnight to your dad if he decides to stay in Georgia.

ok, RV= recreational vehicle lol thats for one of the situations only

the moving van is involved in every situation as it will be transporting all my familys stuff and the aquariums

and thanks for the airline tip there, but i thought you can send fish through the airlines in one way? not commercial flights, but like deliverys, i see it on ebay all the time. and yes we are considering overnight.

RV totally different, they have plugs in them so you shouldn't even need the adapter for that. If the moving van is only carrying the aquarium and the equipment then no issue there, just make sure the tank is well padded and strapped down to avoid cracks.

You can ship fish on non comcerial flights, but it is done the same way someone would ship thier dog or cat. The fish are placed in the baggage compartment, the arrangements usually need to be made well in advance, and there is usually an additional cost. Also, the checking of live animals is only available on certain flights, so if your plane for the flight you are on is not equipped then you have to purchase a second ticket on a flight that has a plane equipped to handel live animals. Now this might be a little different for fish as fish do not require an oxengenated cargo compartment, but you will have to check all that out with the airline first. But even if you can arrange this I am not sure I would want to put them in the cargo hold. But check with the airlines to see if they can even do it first, then ask about the environment.
