ugliest fish i ever bought

I thought my sailfin Pleco was ugly when I first got it. But now I think he is one of the coolest fish ever, and very cute!

Maybe yours will grow on you.

Gabe

The pleco will not remove free floating algae from the water column. What kind of tests are you using? What were the readings?? I know you said they were fine but give us the results. You might also try taking some water to your LFS and having them test it just to back up what you have found. Start there. What kind of filtration do you have? How often do you do water changes?? These are all important questions that need answer so we can help you to pinpoint the problem with your water.

Its called an algae bloom, it is caused by overfeeding (kinda small part) and leaving the lights on for too long. A pleco or any other algae eating fish will NOT rid of it at all, who told you it would?

Get some algae-cide or a diatom filter (will clear it up much quicker)

well my ph is 7.0, amonia level is o.o1 mg/L , nirtite nitrate lavel is 0.7 mg/L, general hardness is at 13. i'm using carbon filters to remove small things, my gravel is not green (yet), i do regular water changes, about 25% every 2 weeks, i only have the light on for about 1 hr every night, i try not to put it on every night. i just don't know what els to do, my fish are feeding on floating pellets, what ever is not eaten after few min, i remove it form the water. my lfs had told me a pleco would take care of it, and they don't test anyones water so i won't be able to have that done, i have 2 different test kits, the main one i use is called tetra test and the other is aquarium pharmaceuticals, i think there good. any idea on what the problem could be?

I'm still trying to get a decent picture of my Pleco with his fins all spread out. The best way I can figure is to use the "Night Framing" infrared mode on my camera though since the tank is in the bedroom the flash would wake up the lil' lady.

i brought something that got rid of deseases and it also got rid of cloudyness in the water. with ur tank its like a cloud of algea. maybe u should try it and see if it works. u never know. its called protozin. it worked on my tank but mine wasnt algea cloud. and when it goes cloudy it is from over feeding. if u want to feed them regulary feed them bits at a time like u do with baby fish. thats what i do and my tank is much better. hth

Buying that would be almost a complete waste of money, what he/she needs to do to fix the problem is diatom filter, algae-cide (will need other things to help it work, PM me if you want to take this way), or.. the cheapest way is to cover it in something so no light gets through, the problem will then clear up (in most cases)

Free floating algea blooms are usually caused by too much light getting to the tank, normally sunlight from a nearby window, combined with a excessive nitrate level caused by over feeding and over stocking. Try doing small daily water changes of around 10% and blocking any light from windows in the room, just leaving the curtains/drapes closed will work, and obviously leave the tank lights off apart from when you wish to look at the fish.

i had think towels all around the tank for over a month and when i took it off, i had more algea on each sides. could my oscar cause such a mess? he is a messy eater, but any left over food is taken out. i called my lfs, but she has nothing, she sold me a bottle of "brite n' clear" it didn't do anything good. i'll have to wait till nxt week when i go to another fish store out of town, they usually have alot of different things for aquariums. untill then i'll keept doing water changes.
thanks again for the help, i'll update as soon as i get some aglea remover stuff.

Get a smaller tank, and then cycle it.

Methinks you should then move your fish into the temporary smaller tank, and then perhaps do a 100% water change and cycle in this big one. Blitz and clean EVERYTHING maybe.

That's one option...

that sounds like a good idea but i gave my other tank to my little cousin, i figured i wouldn't need it. but then i don't think my fish would of lived, it was only a 5gal., i have an oscar and an african cichlid who don't like eachother very much. i had emptied the tank about 1 1/2 weeks ago, i only left about 3 inches of water and it only helped a bit. i'll try to get some stuff for the tank, maby a filter and algea stuff, if it doesn't work i guess i'll have to put my fish in my dads 10gal. sink.(and not tell him :hey: )

Do you ever vacuum your gravel? If you empty out all the water and pour fresh back in, all the stuff will get stirred out of the gravel and it will look the same.

finally problem fixed!! here's a pic of my tank now.
