Ugggh! Big Problems :( We Have Fleas...

First off Wow. Ian great way to throw a stereotype about americans, i can just as easily make a whole lot of fun out of you. Anyways not going to touch that. KJ I know very little about this. I did some research. There are a few options one of which has been discussed. There are powders for your home that work to kill the fleas without the harmful affects of flea bombs. I found this link it may be of some use. http://store.doyourownpestcontrol.com/Pest..._DFLEASTOP.html

Otherwise from what i read up on flea bombs and other peoples experience. It is recomended to cover the tanks... And cover them well. I dont know how long the bomb stays in the house but from what ive read online people have stated that the pesticides do remain in there fish tank gravel and it has become a problem. Although i have seen most peoples response to this has been cover the tanks and it appears things have been fine.

I would hate to say that this is all going to work and then none of it does and there be a serious fish catastrophy. I would recomend more research. I will continue to look into this until i find either a product that wont harm fish reguardless of whether the tank is covered or not, or another way to go about doing this. Good Luck! I will let you know what i turn up.

 muppet, i actually do find it funny, make fun all you want (chances are you will make fun of the english anyways so i dont mind  :good: (until you now go and google some stero-typical welsh jokes)

couldnt find the jokes huh?

Sorry if it came across that way, it just seems WAYYYYYYYYYYYY over board to bug bomb the whole house just for fleas! i would go for the spray/powder stuff and frontline the animals. The fleas will be dead and they only reason you carry on using it is to make sure that if there were any eggs that they are now dead :good:

Those are 3 of my babies...anyways I'm doing more research and will let everyone know what I come with and how it turns out...if you would like.

I agree to go with the powder and maybe a spray first, if you've only seen one flea you're probably not badly infested.

Just a note, since you've never used a liquid flea treatment on your cat keep a close eye on him/her where you apply the treatment. I have one cat that I can't use any liquid flea stuff on him, if I do his fur falls out and he gets really bad sores. On the plus side, as soon as I wash the stuff off and put some ointment on, his sores quickly heal and the fur grows back just fine. We tried several different types of flea treament (as the vet recommended) before coming to the conclusion that he can only wear flea collars. According to my vet cats are more prone to skin reactions to dogs.

Also, not sure if I read it wrong or not, but make sure you only use Frontline for cats on your cat. Apparently the cat and dog formulas have different pesticide concentrations and they're not interchangable. :good:

bug bombing the house seems very extrema to me, I'm totally confused! the chances of your dog getting fleas again are high and the chances of someone bringing in fleas to the house are high!
buy that front line flea, lice and tick spray for dogs, was everything bedsheets, curtains, dry steam the couch, the floor, you can get steam mops and hand held steamers.
then spay your dog with the flea spray it will kill fleas for up to 3 months or so, then spray the couch, and the dogs bed, not sure if you can use it on bed sheets, but after 30 minutes the spray is water proof so it wont matter if your dog gets wet,
as for the fish.. all i think of is get some waterproof plastic and over the tank with it a few times and tape the whole thing out and maybe ask if the bug bomb chemical stuff can penetrate plastic,
is pumping a bunch of chemicals into your house safe?
i have only ever heard of Americans doing it for infestations of cockroach's,
ok i looked up bug bombs and the don't seem that effective they seem to be more of a repellent and a few websites say you'd be better of using a spray you can reach under the bed and stuff, the bug bomb it says is highly flammable and a good few houses exploded! i really don't think its very safe or effective, and just for fleas it seems extreme.
i live in Ireland i personally never found fleas in my house but anyone with a dog gets them at some point so they flea spray the dog and wash every thing, since they cant feed of the dog they die and that's it.

for to add that it is mainly cat fleas that attack humans so i wouldnt worry about the dog fleas too much

Advantage formula for dogs and cats is the same so if you want to do the buy a large dose and divide it thing I'd use the Advantage and the Tubs have caps so you can store it in the original container. Frontline is also light sensitive and if it is stored in a container that is not light resistent it will break down the chemicals in the frontline.

We had a really bad flea problem a month ago. I mean REALLY bad. I couldn't go to sleep most of the time b/c I was too busy scratching new flea bites. I have my bitten up feet/ankles to show how infested we were.

We got a spray bottle of Frontline from our vet for 50 or 60 dollars. We have 4 animals that need to be treated, so it was cheaper for us to go w/ the spray bottle, and it says you can use it on both cats and dogs.
So yeah.. you pretty much dampen the animal w/ the stuff all over.
We didn't do it quite as much as it said to, but it still worked like a charm.
We saw results instantly.

There are still a few stray fleas that jump on me sometimes, but not nearly as many before, and I'm sure as we keep using Frontline, eventually that problem will be eliminated as well.

Frontline is your friend! lol

I would definitely avoid using a bug bomb at all costs. Just too much hassle even if you don't have to worry about fish tanks. All of that cleanup you would have to do afterwards... BLEH.

bug bombs are a waste of money!!!! i bought 9 to bomb a small 5 roomed apartment and they still didnt kill the boogers! tea tree oil deters them.

Not all Americans go so far as to bug bomb an entire house for a minor flea infestation you know. I'm sure there are people in the UK who would do the bug bomb. It's not nice to assume that people from the same country are all exactly the same.

Tea Tree oil is toxic to cats and dogs though so if you go that route be careful.

really? i was advised by the vets to use the tea tree oil as a deterrent as after the failure of the bug bombs i did not want to use any more chemicals! another natural ingridiant i was told was garlic. a little in a doggs diet will make them 'sweat'(?) garlic and fleas cant stand it.

but as pointed out above check this vet was correct, dont want to harm your animals!
