i am in the middle of my cycling, with ammonia reading 0.5ppm (on the decline) and nitrites reading 2.0ppm (on the rise).

i did the first half of the cycle with two fish but now am doing the second half of the cycle with ammonia.

is it ok to use ammonia that has these ingredients: soft water, ammonia, surfactant?

i remember someone telling me to use ammonia that doesn't fizz when shaken, but mine fizzes. is that ok?

I am no expert in this area but I did a fishless cycle with ammonia and the ammonia I used had surfectants in it and it fizzed when shaken but I had no Ill effects in my 75 gallon but I did use carbon in my filter while cycling. All fish that were intoduced after the cycling did fine and havent lost any yet and that was 3 months ago. Good luck! Jimmy

how much ammonia should i add per day to my 10g tank?

i heard i should add 5 drops per day until i got a positive nitrite reading, after which i should add 3 drops per day.

You don't want surfactants. That is a form of detergent. The only items it should have is ammonia, water and possibly cheleating agents (not necessary but ok).

In my opinion fishless cycling is a waste of time,i would just set up your tank, add your heater and bacteria, water softner etc etc....leave overnite, then go and buy 3 zebra danios and let nature take it course but dont add more fish till your readings are perfect.Going off my experience it will cycle faster and you will have some fish to look at :fun:

Where do you get the bacteria? If you're speaking of the "bacteria in a bottle" products like Cycle then you just as well have dropped the money you paid for it in the tank. They both contain about the same amount of beneficial bacteria. Bio Spira does work but only if has been properly handled and refrigerated.

When you say the tank cycled faster, I assume you ware talking about how long it took the ammonia and nitrite to get back to 0 after adding the danios. That does not mean the tank is cycled. It only means there are enough bacteria to handle 3 danios. Once you add 3 more fish, you have to go through the same process again. Then add more and do it again. After about 3 months you are finally fully stocked and have been doing daily water changes the whole time.

With a fishless cycle, you are COMPLETELY cycled in 2 to 6 weeks and can add your full stock of fish then and all you've had to do is test water daily (you would also be doing that with fish) and add more ammonia when needed.

ok, i just got some 'clear ammonia' from walmart that has the right ingredients (soft water, ammonia, and chelating agent).

now i think i have to add 0.25 teaspoons of ammonia daily until it reads 0 to cycle the tank. (i just had a nitrite spike)

can someone confirm if this is the right amount to add?

The stuff from WM is what I used. I think the brand was Sea Mist or something like that.

ok,yeh i did mean cycled enough for my 3 danios then i wait a few more weeks until i put any more in,but i also know the point your making,i guess im not patient enough to do a fishless cycle :p
