I've officially got the betta bug XD We went to walmart last night and i just wanted to look and see if they had any females I could get to add to my sorority... and, well, I didn't see any, and then my fiancee saw a sticker for them... I guess if they had had any they were long gone by the time I got there, as they had them in a tank with Oscars... at least, that what it looked like by the stickers. >.< Stupid people.

So, hoping maybe they'd have some females in the cups, I started looking those... I don't feel knowledgable enough to take the really badly off betta's, but there was one that had maybe an inch of water in his cup and the water was filthy dirty... I couldn't even tell what color he was. Dark, but other than that couldn't tell... and there was another that had three other cups on top of it, and the fish looked dead so I moved the three cups to the counter, and when I picked it up he started swimming around... poor darling had a rip in his tail that went almost all the way to his body. >.<

So, since I didn't have any more tanks or room, and i felt bad, I looked at the 'Betta tank'... you know the one thats like, maybe 6x2x5? The one that comes with a divider so you can keep two in there? Well, there was an open one so I pulled it out to get a look... its not even that big since the corners are rounded. but they didn't have any other types of small tanks.. all the rest shown were 10 gallons or more, and out of my price range. ^_^6 yet, get this, in the arts and crafts section they had glass 'vases' that would be perfect for a betta, if only they had a lid... but I didn't have enough to buy two and I wanted to get both betta's so, back to the fish section i went, and this time, after looking around more (I'm only 5 feet 1 1/2 inches tall) on the -VERY- top shelf were "pet Transporters" So I helped myself to the ladder nearby and climbed up and found four one gallon plastic rectangular tanks. one of which had a crack all the way down, but I took the two best ones, and even though there had been four tanks, there were only two tops. So I took those too.

I know one gallons not much, but its better than what they were in. The one in the very dirty cup seems to be a dark brown crimson with his tail darkening to a really dark shade of blue and he has red sores on his face, like he'd banged himself into his cup one too many times. The on with the ripped tail has two toned fins, red closer to his body and white farther out... sort of like a messy butterfly pattern, but its hard to tell with the way his fins are, and I still don't know what color his body will be... I'm thinking a pastel, but until I'm sure he's not stressed any more I won't say for sure.

Can't get pics up until probably later in the week.

I gave them both salt baths before putting them in their new homes, and I've been adding Melafix to their tanks as well... any other suggestions to help with fin healing?

And actually, on the topic of new betta's I'll probably get a bunch of males in may or june because of my STUPID FRIEND. The fact that I have repeatedly tried telling her that Betta fish will NOT make good decorations for going in the centerpiece of her wedding, she will NOT listening and its pissing me off. The fact is she wants to have a betta in a glass VASE one each table at her reception pisses me off. The fact that there will be flowers in those vases pisses me off, and though I have tried to tell her multiple times that this is not a good idea, she is determined and headstrong and GRRRRR. When I mention they have to have access to the TOP of the water, she says 'oh, its okay, we'll arange the flowers so they can still breath' That pisses me off! Sorry, just got back from her bachlorette party where once again, she would not listen to me. I say, What will you do with them -AFTER- the wedding? her response? "Oh, We'll figure something out... maybe people at the wedding will take some home with them." since she is not listening to reason, my last hope is that when she gets to walmart (Yes, she will probably get them at wally world. >.<) My hope is she'll get there and see the 'damaged' betta's and decide they aren't pretty enough for her wedding, since no other words of wisdom are working. It's making me want to slap her every time the topic comes up.

*Breaths* Sorry, had to get that rant out of my system to people who would understand, not just look at me and be like, but they're just fish.

I took in a guy with ripped up fins-done by other fish. With mine, it was a matter of time and clean water. I laid off the meds with him as he didn't seem sick and meds stress them more. Salt might hurt if the wounds are open.....just a thought for you for future salt baths. You should know pretty quick if something is really wrong with him and then treat it more aggressively. The sores might be from damage or something worse just to prepare you. I'd post again if this is the case. Yeah, you've got the bug. Ain't it grand tho? Good luck and keep us posted!

You can have your friend email me and I'll give her a lecture on humane treatment of animals if you'd like. Yeah, some people don't get it do they? I've known people who are that way with others too.....not paying attention to what's best for THE PERSON but doing what's best for THEM. You're doing the right thing by trying to inform her even if she doesn't listen. We can only control what we do, not what choices others make. Sometimes we find ourselves going down different roads than old friends......Keep telling her. You'll be able to live with yourself alot easier that way.

Sanadi - if you live in the states and do end up with a ton of bettas from this wedding, and don't think you can handle them all, why not put up an adoption thread here? I'd gladly adopt one or two so long as the only cost was shipping. Heck, if you live close enough, I'll drive to you. Hey, you should organize a "betta rescue squad" raid on the her wedding; a bunch of crazy fish people can show up, mob the place, and grab the fishies.

lmao she'd kill me! But... thats not a bad idea. I've never shipped a betta before but thats not a half bad idea... ^_^ We live in Virginia, not sure how close that is to anyone else... and I'll keep you all updated on both the wedding and my two new boys.

I live in East Tn, which isnt too far from VA :D. Poor little guys. Thank gosh you rescued them from the miserable life of living in a cup. I can't believe your friend wants to do that.:/:( Oh well, pray that she sees all the damaged ones and don't think they're pretty enough! :shifty:

East TN here too, really hope your friend doesn't use the fish in her wedding. Thats too many bettas to try and take care of.

I've been trying to mention to her how goldfish would be pretty, since they don't need to get to the surface to breath, and can be kept together once the wedding is over.... I'll keep ya'all updated. Oh, as for my boy with the ripped fin after a weekend of melafix medicating, his fin is now only 3/4ths ripped, instead of being all the way to his body... so glad to see its healing.

Oh, not goldfish, either. They need a really big tank to be happy. If she's not willing to invest a couple hundred dollars (at least) for a very large tank, then goldfish would not be a good idea, either.

I wanted bettas at my wedding, as well, but I knew it was a bad idea. So, I'm just going to have one betta as the center piece on the high table. :) Maybe you could try to get her to compromise with that?

I know a girl (friend of a friend), who did the same. Not many drunks want to cart home a fish. And most of them that did, they died at the hands of anyhow

BTW, those glass jars in the floral section of walmart is where I get all my nice 1gals.

For the fishroom, I use mason jars tho, for the most part:) They are 25 cents a dozen for the largest size second hand!

Or tell her she could put feeders in all the vases, and a pirhanna at the head table :p That way, after it was said and done, at least you would have the problem solved! I know, crappy joke, but really people. This is like giving puppies for xmas. :shout:

Goldfish would not be happy in a US ten gallon tank? Anyways, she's got her heart set on Betta's... >.< I liked some of the 'vases' in the floral section, but I didn't want to have to worry about rigging a cover with syran wrap or whatnot, and the 1 gallon tanks in the fish section were a compairable price with lids. ^_^ Have read too many threads where people talk about their betta's jumping out. I'll let you tennesseans (?) know what happens... If worse comes to worse and you could adopt some I'd ship them to you,... course, that would lead to a lot more questions on my half, since I've never shipped a fish before, or received a fish by mail before.

I cover all my jars....not just for jumping but for protection against contaiminants. There are many ways to cover jars....
I have special lights that fit the top of jars too:)

The general rule of thumb that I have seen on every goldfish website says 10 gallons of water per goldfish. So, only one goldfish would be able to go in a 10 gallon comfortably.
