Trying To Breed My Cories

they had them at MA today but they had broken up the boxes and put them in to tubs to obviously make more money. they was selling 10 balls for £5.

luckily im off work now so i can test everyday and do water changes as necessary.

I got 50 balls for £9.95 so that is expensive. Inside the box is a plastic sealed tub that contains the balls which would mean that they've broken the seals and I'm not certain I'd want to buy them in that situation. There is also a use by date on the tub

yeah they have broken the seal and put them in little round containers. which look to me like food containers lol

If it was me I'd want the real thing, in the sealed tub, with the use by date and also in it's box - but that's just me
I'm surprised at MA doing that though - unless you can buy them in smaller doses and they've just removed the boxes but that doesn't make sense. I got mine from MA in York and they were boxed ... hmm odd

Anyway, the point is that they are good and I intend to keep using them and the use by date is 2014 so there's no hurry to use them up. I have to say my tank is crystal clear and it seems to be dealing with the mini cycle really well :)

whoop!! :kana: He is a he!! He's just tried to t-position with a female

c'mon new boy I want to see eggs  :p

this is very odd! I've got whitespot in the tank so the temp is up at 28. I've just added the first dose of protozin and suddenly my cories are going nuts!!

I didn't expect this with a higher temp and meds in the tank!!

Cories can go hyper when meds are in the tank - not because they're happy, cos its stressing them...

You sure it is whitespot? - when i first had sand,i thought the corys had whitespot,it was in fact grains of sand stuck to them

Someone recently told me that albino cories dont get ich, do you know if thats true?

I am treating for ich as well, some tetras I ordered in had been packaged poorly and had some serious issues that lead to ich... anyway I've lost 2 cories this week {either to ich or because of the medicating}

I hope your spots go quickly Akasha, mine seems to be on the last leg, Thank goodness.

I'm not completely certain but here's a picture I've just taken of my female platy that has 2 small white dots at the base of her tail (about half way up) that I suspected was white spot. If you all want to look and either confirm it or tell me it's not then that would be great

My male platy looks like he's got a few sprinkles of white spots at the end of his tail too but I couldn't get a picture of him as he's too quick

All my cories are flashing too

I also spotted a peppered cory covered in sand this morning ... he was sat there looking all innocent ... it was kinda funny! Like a dog when it's torn the house apart and you come home and shout 'what did you do?!'

my Dad has just called and he says it's not white spot it's just a general mark on her tail. That's a relief

just tested my water. ammonia has a very slight tint of green from what i can see. so im doing a 50% WC. nitrite still 0 though

I'm doing around 50% a day at the moment just trying to keep it under control. It's driving me bonkers. I've gone from a stable, cycled tank to what looks like an unstable, uncycled tank and I'm beginning to regret the change over now

yeah thats how i was when i had my mini cycle. very disheartening and disappointing to be fair. i think(more like hope) i have skipped it. a few days before i did the swap i stirred up the gravel until the tank was murky and repeated this everyday for about 3 days so i think most of the bacteria fromt he gravel went either in to the filter or stuck to the tank walls.

either that or the boost of ammonia from the poo in the gravel just over compensated for the lack of bacteria when i chucked the gravel out.

edit: doesnt really make sense.. but it did to me at the time lol

I think we just underestimate how much good bacteria gravel holds. Plus when I re-filled my tank I did it with a hose straight from the tap but I left my filter sponges in so they were sat in clorinated water for a bit. That may have killed off a small amount of bacteria - not sure if that's possible but they were sat in tap water for maybe 5 minutes before I remembered to chuck in some stress coat. In hindsight I should've taken the sponges out before I stripped the tank but I'd run out of buckets so I left them in.
This re-cycling could well be my own stupid fault. Either way I am pretty miffed off about it but I just gotta keep going with the water changes and adding bacteria and hope it re-cycles soon

On a plus note - the cories are enjoying the daily fresh water! They're having a party at the moment

i just did a big 50% change. the cories are loving it! they get a lot more active after a bit of cold water lol

the GBR have perked up a bit to. coming to the front of the tank now and eating bloodworms with the cories!

Do keep doing daily water changes, as I'm afraid leaving your sponges in the chlorinated water likely killed the bacteria, which is what chlorine is supposed to do. Good luck.
