Trying To Breed My Cories

If you have other fish in the tank don't bother playing around with cold water. I've never done colder water change and the cories spawn more often than you would expect.

thanks Snazy, I was worried it could potentially shock my other fish so much they could die

well they've had bloodworms again tonight and cory play time is brewing. The younger bronze pair have just been chasing and what I call 'kissing' (when they go mouth to mouth - that's what it looks like!) but then they disapeared into the plants where I couldn't see what was going on. One of the old bronze's joined in for a little while - the other is asleep under the bog wood. They've now gone back to hunting for food but I'm sure they'll get going again if I sit and watch. No sign of t-position or egg laying.

All my other fish have gone off for a rest into the plants - obviously full and contented and needing a snooze lol

still no sign of eggs. I've had an idea though and I'm wondering if it will work.

My Dad got a small glass tank from my aunties garage when I had all the guppy babies. He's cleaned it out and now the guppy fry have gone to the lfs it's surplus to requirement.

I'm wondering if I should bring it home, put a thin layer of sand in the bottom and an airstone and put a pair of cories in for a week (or more maybe) - doing perhaps daily cold water changes and feeding bloodworm. If they then spawn there would be no other fish to eat the eggs (other than the parents) and if I see them lay eggs I can then remove them and put them back to the main tank leaving the eggs by themselves in this small tank.

would it work?

It could, but sometimes its not a matter of getting them to. I thought for a long time that mine weren't breeding. Turns out they were. But if you dont catch them in the act, they will eat the eggs before you have a chance to save them. I really hope you get them to though. I have a cory fry right now in a aerated jar. Only survivor from the 30 eggs I saved lol

I really wish I could tell you how I got mine to spawn. Truth is, I didn't do anything.

It may work, depending if they're in the mood, , its worked for me in the past, with 3 separate lots of cories :good: but whether it was triggered or they just wanted to breed i dunno...

I've just come home to the albino's spawning again  - these 3 were initially triggered off in a separate tank, and they've readily breed in the big tank ever since- hence the eggs... i gotta be super quick in removing the eggs,as the other corys and especially the dwarf gourami can wolf eggs down before i blink

Patience is a virtue in cory breeding :good:

it's just a little frustrating to see them showing spawning behaviour and nothing coming from it. The young bronze pair were chasing around most of last night and again this morning. The thing is I have my bogwood that they hide under and loads of plants now - all of which disguise all kinds of behaviour. They could be laying eggs anywhere but if they're hiding them in the plants I've no chance of ever finding any - plus the platies (and the 2 remaining guppies) will be eating them as you say.

I need to get a new bubble stone as I broke mine a few days ago. I may bring this little tank home and have a try - guess I have nothing to lose

Thanks :)

Thats one of the reasons i sold my platies & guppies - they were terrors for the eggs... :grr:

Pity your other tank wasn't bigger, you could have moved the livebearers in there and leave the corys where they were (easier to catch these than corys   )

Next time the cories look has though they're very active,do a cold waterchange, this may trigger them into breeding - they can be fooled into thinking its the rainy season and will spawn

I like my platies, I'm waiting for the guppies to die though - I won't be getting anymore. I'd like to replace them with some Rams - something a bit more challenging.

okay, I've just fed some frozen daphnia and taken out about 5 or 6 litres of tank water and replaced with cold (and I mean cold - from the tap with a dribble of stresscoat)

Now, we wait ...

just checked the temp gauge - it's down to 20 from 23/24 .... will that be enough of a temperature drop?

I wish I was as successful with breeding cories as I am with platies and guppies .... I've just found four living inside my filter

Give it time - they'll get there sooner or later :good:

Unfortunetely with livebearers they will breed like theres no tomorrow......

I had 500+ fry at one point with my livebearers, ending up giving all of them away to various peeps & lfs
