hi,
im kinda new to this forum ...joined a few years back or so but dont post much .. just read all the good info..
but i was wondering if anyone has or is keeping
German Blue Ram
(Papilochromis ramirezi)

or
Green Terror
(Aequidens rivulatus)

I love the looks of both of these fish and am thinking about getting one of the 2 and trying to get some breeding pairs in a large corner tank
we will see
thanks in advance for any help!

hi,
you don't see many people use the name Papilochromis ramirezi much. normally its called Microgeophagus ramirezi, spelled with a c or k. any way for it to do well it needs soft and acidic water with a low GH. if you haven't got that from your tap and you still want to keep and breed it the only way to go would be to use ro water.
the green terror i know nothing about, sorry

Don't try it.A green terror will swallow your ram whole  .I don't think it's possible to breed them aswell.

what breed GT's?

GT's are as easy to breed as any other "easy" to breed cichlid :good:

Green Terror
(Aequidens rivulatus)

and when you say GT are you thinking of
1 - gold saum (Aequidens` sp. "Goldsaum")

2 - silver saum (Aequidens` sp. "Silversaum")

3 - Green Terror (Aequidens` rivulatus)

Sorry misread the post.Thought he was trying to breed the two

i have to say, those are kind of funny as the only two options... rams are small, relatively peacefull cichlids. green terrors are large, relatively aggressive cichlids. typically folks are only interested in one or the other.

i'd only recommend breeding the rams. there's just not enough people interested in green terrors (false ones) that can house them correctly. add in the fact that false green terrors are plentiful and cheap in common stores such as PetSmart and its just not a good picture for the home breeder. rams are in something of the same boat, but those at least can be housed in the popular smaller tanks. just don't expect to recoup much of your investment.

however! if you can lay your hands on some true GTs, then there's a whole specialists market just waiting to snap up babies. but count on spending a fortune to get a breeding pair of those.

I don't know much about small cichlids so can't help you there but you won't find pure A. rivulatus in any LFS. If you do decide to breed them buy them from Jeff Rapps. They are very mild mannered fish, in comparison to cichlids, and many can live in a community fish tank. That's how non-aggressive they are.

But...take a look at pica_nuttalli's last paragraph in his/her post. I agree 100% with it.

There is someone on CM selling fryfrom a "true" GT spawn. He got them from Jeff Rapps on tangledupincichlids.com

The guy on CM, he has a good deal on them for the members over there. It's like 6 unsexed fry for like $100 you can grow them otu and get a pair, Then you will be in the money. If I had the room, I would get some myself! If you amnt to know what CM is... PM me as I'm not going to get into trouble posting it in open forum :p.

CM may mean CichlidMaster? I don't know, just a guess from the CM.

I would NOT buy from anyone that you don't know or trust any of them.

Also, Jeff Rapps, is THE cichlid man. I can almost guarantee you that EVERY one of these other cichlid sellers in the whole US gets all of their fish from him. Why not forego the middle man and save money? Rapps is THE place that 99.9% of ALL cichlids from Central and South America comes into the US from.

In my 30 years of cichlid keeping, I've yet to meet 1 cichlid seller that doesn't get his cichlids from Rapps. Not saying it's not possible but not likely and definitely not anyone who's known does it that I know of.

I'm not affiliated with Rapps or even keep cichlids right now and haven't for a while. Just telling it like it is.

CM= Cichlidmadness

But he got his from Jeff Rapps and the members over there are very good reputable cichlid keepers. I go there for most of my cichlidkeeping info.

It's a great place.

:D

Oh and you're right, if its a WC (wild caught) cichlid, I can almsot bet any money it came from Jeff Rapps somewhere along the lines :D
