trouble determining High Range pH

Hi everyone, so my regular pH was just testing to be very dark blue. So I tested it on the high range pH side, and I had a question about that, what is my high range pH? When i test it, it turns out to be red then the color changes and it becomes light-solid brown, what high range pH number is this? I am using the API freshwater master test kit.

Just in case...
Water only has a single value for pH, there is no high range or low range. The tests can only measure a limited range. So if your results are right at the top of the "low range" measure with the high range. Or if its right at the bottom of the high range measure with the low range. Once you know which test to use you don't need the other one.

I have one of those API chemistry sets and it has two pH tests. High and low as you mentioned. Low is for acidic , below 7.0 , up to about 8.0 . The high pH test is to test for overly alkaline pH if I understand it right. If you don’t get a readable reading on the low test you go up to the high test. Maybe somebody more chemically fluent can explain this better.

Each of the two testers has a range of pH.
The one labelled as just pH measures from 6.0 to 7.6. If the pH is below 6.0 is still shows the 6.0 colour, and if it's higher than 7.6 it still shows the 7.6 colour no matter how high it is.
The one labelled High Range pH measures from 7.4 to 8.8, and if the pH is below 7.4 is still shows the 7.4 colour no matter how low it is.


The highest colour with the pH tester is blue, so you did the right thing checking with the High Range tester. But I am confused with your red colour as the chart starts at yellow, and goes through orange, brown and purple though the range. There is no red on my chart.

Can I check with you -
The 'low range' tester needs 3 drops, but the High Range tester takes 5 drops - are you adding the full 5 drops with the High Range tester?
Are you reading the colour straight away - there is no wait time like with ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.
You are adding only drops from the High Range bottle, not using both bottles at the same time?
