Totm Competitions

Im not being funny but if other peoples tanks are better then yours, dont they deserve to win?

If they have been putting alot of effort time and money into a tank and want to enter it into a competition for tank of the month, why shouldnt they win if peoples opinion is that it is
really nice..

I understand it would be hard to win if you're a newby, but then the standard is high for a reason, why should the standard be lowered so that newbies can have a chanve of winning? I just dont quite understand. It is a competition at the end of the day.

I'm thinking about entering my 40g next month. It's nothing special and its not planted, but its a well established community with alot of happy fish....Like they said, nothing to lose, if anything, i'll gets some tips on making it better :) Heck, I just entered my betta is the FOTM. He's just a blue crowntail, nothing special, but he's pretty and I am proud of him. :) Even if you don't win, still be proud of the work you have done.

then maybe tank size catagories.I beg to differ Kane, I have spent a big majority of my day..every day on my tanks. I would consider this an "effort" and as for the money....yes..i have spent a few pounds too!

Posts like this won't encourage any noobs to enter their tanks will it?

I for one am very proud of my tanks all 3 of them....and as my first shot at it....i think they are very nice!

Guess i'll have to wait till i have a 4 foot plus then?? :good:

What's the point in dividing a competition into segments? There are only about 10 entries per month anyway, categorizing it would be silly, the big tanks don't always win, just take a look at the past winners gallery, it clearly shows that you can win irrespective of tank size. Enter, if you don't win, what have you lost? Nothing, what have you gained? Maybe a little constructive criticism which will help you win in the future.

maybe there would be more entries if the noobs were encouraged to join, dont you think???

What's discouraging those new to the hobby from joining in? What have they to lose?

enter or don't enter.I really don't see what all the fuss is about. If you don't win, so what. You lose nothing. You might gain some insight into improving it, that you may not have considered yourself.

if you like your tank, does it matter what other people (who you don't know) think?

if you do win, whoopee. You get a little kudos, and a pic in your sig.Does it really mean anything else.It doesn't necessarily mean that you know anything.I could buy a big tank, and lots of potted plants 'scape' it nicely and take a photo

with my nice expensive camera that looked the business. But 2 weeks later half the plants could be dead, or it could be a big algae mess.Same tank, just different time scale.

As has been mentioned previously elsewhere, sometimes it's as much picture of the month,as it's tank of the month.

We all like our own tanks, and hope that others will to.I've posted mine in 2 seperate forums for crying out loud, just because i crave the attention

This is just my opinion, and i reserve the right to enter TOTM whenever i want in the future despite all the previous remarks.

I'm sure if you asked the majority of people who have won the totm competition, they will tell you they have worked very hard on their tank and have put a lot of thought and dedication into creating a beautiful tank. Some people have the knack for creating beautiful landscapes and some people do not. Some people have natural talent and a keen eye for creating a winning tank even though they may be a newbie and some people learn the skill over time and with experience. There are also those who struggle and can't seem to "get it right" so to speak. Regardless, the totm competition is what is is and I don't think it should be sub-catagorized in that way. I think attitude is a big part of it too...if you don't think you're going to win, you're probably NOT going to win. It's just supposed to be a friendly competition, not something to made into a big deal. I mean really, it's not like we're competing for a million dollars or anything. I think that if YOU like your tank and are proud of it, that should be good enough. You shouldn't need to win a competition to prove it to yourself otherwise. Also, you have nothing to lose by entering. I have a lot of respect for all the people that enter the totm so there you go, even if you lose, you still get props :good: ...well from me anyway :D

I actually started a topic asking for a nano section/comp if you look in board announcements and suggestions. I dont really see where you're coming from about four foot+ tanks. They do not win it every month at all, most are average sized or small as its very hard to scape a four foot tank, just look at aquascaping comps, they are not massive tanks

I agree with Stu40. I have recently bought a load of very healthy plants and i have added them to the tank and imo it looks absolutely stunning, and tbh, i could enter it in totm right now, but i think it would be a bit unfair as other than the 'scaping' it's not actually my work as i haven't grown and nurtured them. I will consider entering it next month when i hopefully have managed to grow the plants in a bit and keep them looking healthy.

And i would say most TOTM winners tanks are of a more medium size than 4ft+

The Tank Of The Year was pretty much a nano, so you certainly don't need a 4ft+ tank to win.
