Hi,so sorry to hear for your loss. How old was your heater? The ones most likely to fail are brand new ones or very old ones.

The only heaters I trust are Visitherm. I 'd never buy any other brand as I've heard lots of horror stories. They've been voted best heaters several years' running by PFK magazine. They're very accurate and reliable. They're usually dearer than other makes but I've just ordered a 150w one for £11.99 brand new from an Ebay seller.

I totally agree on the visitherm.the one in my tank is at least 16yrs old and was dry for 10 years, tested it before setting up my tank again, and had no problems at all!

They want me to send them the heater, will do i also asked for them to send me an S.A.E becuase im not payng for it. My next mail will be asking for a new heater (which i will sell as il never use them again) and to find out what the problem was

You'll probably want to demand that before they pick up your broken heater. Always push for as much compensation of companies like this as possible, they don't want to risk maximum exposure.

I would definitely have that heater examined by an external source though. It sounds very "conspiracy" like of me however the amount of defunct electrical equipment coming out of Asia is astonishing and it wouldn't surprise me if you were to find out there was something critically wrong with the heater, thus the request for you to mail it to them and "examine" would be to cover their product up.

I've been to China myself multiple times and have bought all sorts of electronics from "malls" which are usually full of thousands of short people and millions of copied/stolen or if you're lucky legitimate products. I had experienced a laptop battery that overheated and leaked within a matter of days and a phone charger that melted. I'm extremely cautious of none mainstream branded electronics made in Asia now.

Take care and I hope it all goes well for you! Sorry for the loss.

I'd recommend people buy a digital thermometer which has a probe that dangles inside the tank. It also has an alarm which you can set and it bleeps if the temperature drops to a certain level or rises too high!! I tested it could hear it bleeping upstairs in bed so would hopefully alert me if a heater thermostat stuck. Not much good if you're out but worth having imo and it's very accurate. Was only £8.99.

Where did you get it and make and model please? :)

Sounds like something very worth while!

So the seal leaked and water/water vapour was exposed to the heater core then rusted the element?

I wouldn't bother touching their heaters again.

I know everyone is saying negative things about them but at least they have said it was their fault, which is a good thing; most people pass the buck back. Are you happy with the result?

Im kind of happy as it means it wasnt my fault but the heater i am getting is defo going on ebay not going use it.... just wish i had all those fish again

+2!!

Sorry to hear about your fish, I would be devastated :( A faulty heater is my worst nightmare since there would be nothing I could do to guarantee it didn't happen again.

Hi everyone. Bear with me and I'll try to find a link for the alarm-thermometer as they really are excellent.

Here it is. I set mine to bleep at over 80deg. so the other night it started bleeping at 81deg at 2am, much to the wife's annoyance. Came down and wasn't a stuck heater but just the warm room due to the temperatures we're having now.
