Total Betta Tank Revamp- Natural Tank

Shrimp defo looks like a young machro or paleomonetes. Gut instinct is telling me its a red claw they are oppurtunistic scavengers they will only nip a fish if it is right in front of them they don't actively hunt fish generally but can cause harm quite easily with their large claws.

Ghost shrimp is a generic name it encompasses a lot of species from freshwater, brackish to marine, it could be anything and they normally turn nasty once grown up. What makes these LFS so highly regarded are they shrimp specialists? Its like calling a Betta just by gourami, you are only giving half the story it encompasses a lot of species infact whilst I am at it Betta is the family name for 20-30 species you have a B.splenden which is then sub divided by giant or normal sized then tail type and colouration.....

Your Betta has long flowing fins and are an easy target for nipping from shrimp, we are not telling you this to spoilt your tank, we are warning you of the risks this is a completely altruistic site we get nothing for what we do whilst an LFS has debatable ethics and morality as they are a business in a cut-throat industry.

Trust me I understand.. If they are the shrimp you speak of, what should I do with them? :( I don't want them to cause harm to my tank inhabitants.

Thanks for posting pics. You have a great camera. I like the "jungle look" of the tank. The shot of the mystery snail is awesome - love the story too. Does look like Oliver is through the worst. I am sure his fins will grow back in no time.

I didnt want to upset you either hun just thought i should point it out incase it was those :)

Have you got another tank to put them in hun , if not inform the lfs you got them from that now they are maturing they NOT proper little ghost shrimps but in fact look like some form of the Macrobrachium or paleomonetes shrimp and that they are attacking your fish

Explain to them that you understand how easy it is to confuse them with the normal algae eating harmless ghost shrimp when they are young and ask for a refund hun

If they cant do this there are lots of people who like this sort of shrimp and you might be able to sell them either in the sales and wants section of this site or any other free to advertise fish sites

Then if you waqnt some shrimp try for cherrys or amanos just add a bit of java moss to help them hide as your tank already has quite a nice lot of plants and hidey holes

Reading one of your previous posts about the cory who lost the eye and the fact the betta got nipped again as soon as he went back in the tank was the first thing that made me have a good look at the shrimp

Take care and let us know how you get on and what you decide to do

Sarah x

Given the number of them they need a tank 20+ gallons it can be planted but another restraint is the tankmates must be 4+" fish. They are an excellent shrimp for delving into larger slightly more aggressive species and if you could have any Macro as mystery shrimp, red claws would be the best, with time you may be able to teach them to feed from your hand. They are omnivores and oppurtunistic so anything that is in the way will get nipped and sampled as food unfortunately Bettas obviously make ideal targets for this. It is easy to breed if you wanted to go down that route and they live for many years once I get a couple of spare 10 gallons having a red claw pair is quite high on the list for me.

The cory that lost an eye was ages ago, waaay before the shrimp were introduced. I do not have another setup for them to be put separately, I guess I will try to return them...

Just a coincidence then but at least it got the shrimp identified hun sorry didnt want to ruin your tank plans
can you advertise them in the classifieds section on this site
they might go to a better home than returning to lfs

Can you home the betta in a different tank ?

Don't have an extra tank for the betta. :(
PRoblem with the classifieds is I don't know how to ship live animals.

Try collection only there might be someone in your area always worth a go then if there isn't you could then take them back
so sorry once again to mess up your beautiful set up :(

I have a neighbor who might want the shrimp....

This stinks. I'd love to get some red cherry shrimp or amano shrimp to replace them but I have no $$ right now.. Ugh.... :(

Just to say great looking tank and glad Oliver is slowly getting there. Good luck rehoming the shrimp! More pics, they are all beautiful!

All the shrimp have been removed and isolated into a large bucket I have equipped with a filter for the time being. Should be able to find them a new home very soon.

Upon Wilder's advice Oliver is getting a second round of treatment, just to be sure, so he's back in the hospital tank.
Got him to eat his pellets today which was fantastic.
Snapped some photos while he was in the tank... (tank has been re-scaped AGAIN), that I will post tonight. :D

If Wilder is helping you, then you're in good hands - he's a genius! Good news that he is eating. Sounds like he's definitely "over the hump". I' looking foward to those pics ... : )

Wilder is a woman ;)

Thank goodness he's getting better, and the tank looks amazing

Aw thank you. I took the advice I was given and switched the wood to the opposite direction today. Looks nice! Pics eventually, batteries of camera are charging.

Dear Forestpisces,

Ha, ha! I am glad you let me know about Wilder. With that name I first immediatly thought of a guy and then when I was writing that post I was thinking "wouldn't it be funny if Wilder was actually a girl...?" Well, I don't know the gender on half the people here. It's kind of very disorienting. I don't care that I don't know how old the person is or what they look like, but not knowing whether I am talking to a boy or girl somehow unsettles me. Like I don't know which you are either. : )

This is the first forum I have ever been part of. I guess I will get used to it with time. Thanks for letting me know. At least I did not have to embarass myself in front of her. : D
