Hi a while ago i was talking about how im getting a tortoise
Well in a few weeks im getting one YAY!

I have been looking on the net and found this which to me looks like a great deal. I have e- mailed them for more info like Box size, lamp type and heat mat. Does it look like a good set?

http://www.plymouthdiscus.co.uk/product_in...f06d2355c61f44e

As with 'good ol english weather' its raining so it will be kept in my room till it warms up a bit and kept in in the winter (plastic box and UV lights eaisly replaced upgraded as and when needed).

I will post up the e-mail reply when i get it back.

Oh anoter question horsefield (russian) or herman tortoise? Is one better than the other?

Thanks
Sean

Here is what i got back,

"The housing size is 31" long by 16" wide and 7" high. The heat mats are 11" x 6" big enough to provide a nice size area to warm up in and the Uvb bulb is made by arcadia and has an extra 7% UVB out put to the old bulb we were selling and are the low energy low wattage 23w types."

sound any good? It works out £200 for a herman tortoise and all the above stuff (and delivery), just need to get calcium and some foos right?

Hi

You an make your own for much cheaper!1 I promise you, I made mine up for £20. Personally I would not buy a tort for here either.

Thanks for the reply

Well i have a heat mat(old corn snake, hardly used) could i just buy a tub type thing and a uvb lamp, my LFS sells tortoises and are known for their good reptile keeping (didnt know how to put that) here i have a link,

How are red legs, they dont hibernate right that would be good. Hmmm maybe i can make up my mind when i go.

Hi

You dont need a heat mat for the tort, it will burn itself. for a first time tort I would not get a redfoot, as they need a certain humidity and a different sort of care. I the horsefield and hermans are great first torts and easy to care for.

The site you looked at was selling they stuff way over price, and from what I understand they are not even sure what the are selling.. ie its says horsefield tort on the heading but then goes on the say ... "Comes with Leopard tortoise...etc.." well thats a coompletely different tort.

Let me know if you want anything else

Yeah i was thinking about that, a leopard tort is so diff they are massive too, i wanted one but it would have to stay in the basement (i would have just made it a big enclosure) but its not really fair and its very dusty etc. I think i will just get a horsefeild. So i need a plastic tub, a heat spot lamp and a uvb lamp.

Thanks for the help

Could i use this to put the heat bulb on? I assume its not good enough for a UVA?UVB bulb

I have an under bed storage draw, a normal lamp with a 60w bulb in and a uv strip. For the substate I have part top soil, part hemp and part reptile bark.

Thanks that helped alot, i am making it more complicated than it is,

Im going to have a look around the net and will post back soon

Thanks for your help

I own two tortoises and they are perfectly happy and well with my set up and many many people use just what I have. a normal 60w bulb is perfect, and costs about £1 and a normal desk lamp is fine.

Is this just a normal tortoise? like the ones we all had in the 70's? I thought you just stuck them in the garden and put food out every day....are these special tortoises you're thinking of getting?
