Hey guys! I have a 5g with my koi betta, Loki in it. He has been currently dealing with clamped fins and the water quality is fine.
Ammonia-0
Nitrite-0
Nitrate-20
Temp-78
Starting tdy I’m going to be doing partial water changes every other day (25%). Okay anyway, I heard that almond leaves will be good for him to recover from the clamped fins but…I feel like this almond leaf may severely impact my water quality. Do y’all think I should cut it in half and take 1 of it out or is it fine. As I stated above, it’s in a 5 gallon for reference and to treat my betta.

Your nitrate level is too high. What is the pH of this tank?
Hi, thanks for the reply. I’ve may of done the nitrate wrong but here are the levels
Ph- 7.8-9 ( too dark to even see on the ph chart)
-I think this is too high for the betta
Ammonia: in between 0-.25
Nitrite-0
Nitrate- 5-10 (read it wrong first time)
What should I do to get lower the ph if needed, I already have an Almond leaf in there, is that good?
Do you guys think that’s what’s affecting him?

How high is your KH? That will affect how the PH changes

Yah, sadly thats the case with the API kit... But to know what you need to do, its best to spend a but of money on it. My KH is at a 14... (Really really really high) and my ph is 8.1... So there is no changing my PH. But for you, 7.8 is fine for a lot of soft water fish like bettas. There are a few on this forum who say my PH is very unhealthy but I get about 30-50 fry from my fish weekly so it cant be that bad.... If I were you I would not even bat an eye to your PH... But your ammonia needs to go to 0
Unfortunately, I do not have a KH test kit. I could only test high range ph and ph.

If you take a sample of your source water to a fish store, they should be able to test the KH and GH for you (call ahead to check first, just in case!) make sure to write down the numbers, and let us know. They might say that it's "fine" but fine doesn't mean anything really, need the numbers to learn anything, and you don't need your own test kit for GH and KH hen the numbers are usually consistent if you use one water source. While going to have the water tested though, also worth taking a sample of the tank water and having *them* test for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH. No harm in getting their results along with your own tests.

The leaf is highly unlikely to be causing any problems, almond leaves actually have antibacterial and antifungal properties that are beneficial for fish health. If you're concerned though, or there is question about the water quality, then remove it by all means.

More concerning is the clamped fins. Clamped fins are a sign the fish is stressed, but the cause of that stress could be almost anything. Poor water quality, battling an illness, or even being bullied by another fish. Means the fish is feeling stressed, and that there's something wrong, but you need a LOT more info to pin down what that thing might be. Don't focus solely on the almond leaves or water as potential causes, when it could be any number of things. Personally I'd make a new post in the fish emergencies section about his clamped fins, and copy paste and fill out the template below so people can try to help figure out what the cause may be. We cannot see the fish or test the water ourselves, so the more info you can provide, the better the chances that someone will be able to work out what's affecting your fish.

I am going to that rn. A couple days ago, I made a post in the emergency section but I only got one response back which said to start with water changes. I’m going to make another post with more info. Thanks for the help

brilliant! Or bump the previous post with the additional info.

Sorry your previous thread got missed, happens a lot on a busy forum, especially one that's international where a lot of members are in the UK, and time zone difference means we're asleep when people in the US post, and other threads have bumped that post down. Don't be afraid to bump the post or create a new one if you think its been missed!

Weirdly, when I went to the emergency forum and posted something, it says my threat is locked for replies?! Any reason why it says that?

@Navfish
I unlocked clamped fin thread. Please dont start multiple threads for same topic.

That was my bad, I encouraged a new thread without knowing there was an old thread that had been missed. My fault, not his/hers!
@Navfish there ya go, was only to prevent confusion with multiple threads on the same topic. My bad for not checking for the old one before suggesting a new one, no worries.
Hopefully we can all figure out if there's anything wrong with your betta and anything that can be improved :)
