hi all just a quickie

we all know mollies prefer slightly brackish water but if they are mixed with other comman livebearers guppies swords, platies etc would it still be ok just 2 put tonic salt in the water , maybe not the full amount per gallon but maybe half the recommended dosage.

would it harm the other fish or would they be ok

fish are in sig if u need 2 know wot .is. in there!!!!

thanx

jen

Guppies and mollies can both be brought into saltwater, and I think platies/sword can safely go up to SG1.003. However, angels, cories, and silver dollars will not appreciate it.

It depends what the hardness of your water already is!!??!!
What does that have to do with salinity?

I think jenclibee has confused tonic salt with "marine" salt...

hmmm.... y would i have confused tonic salt with marine salt i asked about tonic salt in a tropical freshwater tank and posted in the tropical disussion section :fun:

but y is tonic salt sold for that perpose then?

i thought thats wot they would need ,not 2 experienced with the salt side never really used it just thought i would see wot ppl had 2 say lol :)

It can be used, but it should not.

Aquarium salt and tonic salt are not suitable for brackish aquariums as they lack the essential minerals found in seawater.

As an interim measure, aquarium tonic salt is better than nothing, but over the long term your fish will be far healthier if you use proper marine mix. In addition, marine mix is cheaper than tonic salt and available in large boxes and tubs that make for even better value. It doesn't matter which brand you use, but be sure and follow the instructions and ensure that all the salt is dissolved before adding the brackish water to your aquarium

Only by people without the slightest bit of knowledge about what brackish water is. Brackish is part FW and part SW, meaning you need marine salt for it.

Tonic salt is a hang up from the bad old days of fishkeeping when water changes were considered bad, and also because people do not understand quite how FW fish deal with the difference in salt levels of their internals and the water around them (osmoregulation). In an lfs, tonic salt should be placed with the snake oil IMHO.

They should park it next to the bbs hatchery equipment. Lfs salt is such a rip off, you can get the same thing down the road at the feed store, $4/50 pounds.

Tonic salt is pure sodium chloride. Marine salt closely replicates the various minerals found in seawater. Seawater is more than just salt and water. :good:

So which would be better when it comes to using salt to treat fish for certain ills like gill flukes for example? Or are they just as good as each other from a medication perspective?

Neither, to be honest. You should use an effective med rather than salt to treat ills.

When it comes to setting up a brackish tank, marine is far superior to tonic.
