Toms 240l Planted Journal

another kind of update

still cycling

will be purchasing 3 more pieces of wood and i have a perfect idea of what i want. will try and draw it to show you

also purchased a pressurised co2 kit of a fellow member. should come monday or tuesday. just got to fine somewhere to get it filled

little update.

cycing nearly finished and co2 arrived. i am going on holiday for a week so getting mum to add ammonia every day

i wont be getting fish for another 2 months because i can get them cheaper then. but i will plant in about 2 weeks to let them get settled before fish go in. and i have agreat idea of how i want it too look which is good

Well done on being nearly finished cycling! Mine seems to be going so slowly...I'm on day 14, and it's still take 4 or more days for 4ppm ammonia to go

well at least everyone cares about their fish enough to do a fishless cycle! I am only into day 3 :) got about a fist full of used filter medium and planning planning planning...

update:

back from holiday and filter bacteria is still alive but havnt tested yet, but im guessing the cycle is pretty much finished. i will be getting the plants in the next few days and planting them soon, will then get the co2 going (got a new diffuser) and waiting to get a new circulation pump

im about to get 2 more pieces of wood which should finish the hardacape with a few rocks around them.

will take some pics of the new stuff i got in a sec

get the stones of the wood. it doesnt look very good and you really dont want them to fall off.
Instead get some more wood and 'shove' it together. look at other peoples journals for 'what works and what doesnt'
It is a source of FREE inspiration.

EDIT: I realised that the stone may be there for weight purposes if its redmoor.

what type of gouramis were you thinking? gold and blue can get aggressive, I have one gold male and he bullies my 2 angels sometimes, he is definitely the dominant one in the tank
german blue rams can be sensitive and some have trouble keeping them, I had two a male and female. the male lived a year and a half then died, he grew very pale and stopped eating and I dont know why. The female disappeared recently and I havent found a body. She was 2 but looked in good health.
I suggest 1, 2, or 5/6+ angels. 1 solo, 2 as a mating pair or 5/6+ to spread out aggression. I learned from experience on that.. what type of angels? scalare? I think some gold or platinum or silver angels would look very pretty (not veiltail, not sure if the tetras will pick on their fins, never had them)
As for plecos, Im not sure, but I prefer otos.
Are you set on these fish or are you open to suggestions? Hehe.

Any more ideas on which plants? I found my angels like to eat and tear up wisteria and christmas moss and found parts floating all over. Not good for an aesthetic look.
You can try looking here for some ideas on plants

Very nice so far though, can't wait to see it finished !

i would buy loads more wood, and some rock(actual rock, not pebbles), then have the wood branching everywhere with some rocks underneath them. then get loads of moss to go on the wood, java fern narrow, glosso, rotala and long thin plant, maybe vallis

cheers

but i know exactly what i want it to look like so im going for that

im not set on the stocking although it will revolve around angles

ok im going for discus for many reasons

planting ideas wont change but none of the fish i currently have will be moved over so i will be starting from scratch

still trying to find some wood i like

Why did you decide discus? I thought they do better in bare tanks...?

Why did you decide discus? I thought they do better in bare tanks...?

Not really. But Discus keepers that intend on keeping really specialized Discus or intend on breeding them will keep them in bare tanks so that cleaning is easier.
