Today's a new day.

My Australian decimal note collection comprised of all the Australian notes (1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 & 100 dollar notes) in paper and plastic and for each new Prime Minster. I also had most of the coins from 1966-2010 ish. I had about a dozen 1966 50 cent coins, all were in mint condition and never been polished. There's thousands of 1966 silver 50 cent coins in the country.

I did enjoy fishing with dad. He worked long hours and we didn't see him in the morning when we got up for school, and he got home late and we were ready for bed. So spending the weekends with him and going fishing was nice.

I suppose the best fish I caught was a 5kg (about 2ft long) mulloway that I caught a few days after my 7th birthday. Dad took one of my sisters (not the crazy one) and I to Canning Bridge and we tied the boat up to the pylons and threw some lines in. I was using my new rod and reel that dad gave me for my birthday and caught the first fish a few minutes after casting the line in. It took about 30 minutes to get in and dad was trying to help me because the fish was too powerful for me to bring in alone. While this was happening my sister hooked up to one as well and dad was going back and forth trying to help us both get these fish in. That was the only fish I caught that night but my sister got 4 in total and dad didn't get any fishing done because he was helping us pull our fish in. :)

The best fish my dad caught was a 4 foot long mulloway and we used to have a photo of it with him holding this thing and me standing next to him. The fish was bigger than me, although I was only about 6 at the time.

We also had something drag out boat about 5km out to sea before we cut the line. We were fishing off the coast of Fremantle near a shipwreck and something grabbed the big rod and started peeling line off. The boat was anchored and dad tightened up the drag on the reel and whatever it was started pulling the boat out to sea while it was still anchored. We pulled up the anchor and got dragged out to sea, after about 30 minutes dad was getting worried and he cut the line and we went back to shore. I assume it was a big stingray, they have the power to do that and some of them can reach 8-10 feet across.

Interesting. What is the rarest heirloom you owned?

This is starting to be interesting. Fishing is a hobby for anglers (not for me, yet). Grandad used to have a boat and used to go crab fishing. He doesn't have it anymore. :(

As for stamps, how rare are stamps in the 1910s-1930s?
I lost a collection of Australian decimal coins and notes (including the 1966 round 50 cent pieces that were made from silver), along with money from other countries, although most of it wasn't heirloom. One of the round 50 cent coins was a gift from my grandmother. I lost heaps of stamps, some of which dated back to the 1930s. There may have been others that were older but I never got around to looking at them all, too many stamps.
How did you get the 50 cent coin from your grandma? Can you tell me a story about it please? You could've gifted the stamps to a local stamps museum to save them from being missing.

Probably the bible

Fishing isn't a hobby for me anymore. I used it in 2016 to catch food to eat (raw fish and seaweed :( ) but I hadn't been fishing for years before that. These days I consider fishing a blood sport unless you are going to keep the fish for food.

No idea how rare stamps are in 1910-30. I didn't know I was going to be made homeless by an incompetent judicial system so even if I wanted to give the stamps to a museum or someone else, it wouldn't have happened unless I knew I was going to become homeless first.

When we were younger we were watching dad show us how they lift bodies in the armed forces. Being kids, we decided to try it on each other. I grabbed one of my cousins and picked him up and was carrying him around and he didn't like it so he bit me on the leg. Grandmothers being grandmothers, she got all upset because I was upset and she did a little magic trick and pulled this shiny 50 cent coin out of thin air and gave it to me. Fifty cents was a lot of money back then. I had never seen a round 50 cent coin before and it was quite unusual. A few years later some scumbags broke into our home and stole it along with other stuff and they bought pocket knives with the money they stole. I managed to get more round 50 cent coins after that but I lost the actual one my grandmother gave me. :(

I know... I understand your opinions about fishing nowadays. To understand the differences between that and aquarium hobby: The fishing hobby is about catching fish for game but also for nice dishes i.e. barramundi and chips. The aquarium hobby is about keeping tetras, native fish and aquatic animals. I know that grandmothers were very good people. I had a granny, who died in 2020 at the aged care home in Mandurah, and she was a nice person.

I would go back in time to save everything you lost, but time is inevitable. Did you had an heirloom extension cord? You did mention it in a post before.

Bah, the story about the 50 cent coin is very sad. I'd love to rebuild your stamp collection, but I live elsewhere in Perth :(

The fish book from 1922. Can I recreate those nice bowls that were in the book, in real life, please?

The extension cord wasn't an heirloom, just a really long extension cord we had back in the 70s. It weighed heaps and took a few minutes to roll up, but I could run it across most of the backyard and we used it in summer to have a light out the back.

If you google old style glass fish bowls from the 1910-20s, you might be able to find pictures of them.

A future project of mine (once I'm an adult) will be recreating what fish bowls looked like in the Roaring 20s, based on the description about the bowls of an unnamed fish book you inherited from a friend. And probably put tiny preserved aquarium fish in the bowl to see how big the bowl was. The WA Museum has a fish section, locked away from the public.

I'm on a mission to help our fishkeeping hobby. Recreating what aquariums looked like 100 years ago and doing current, separate tanks for rainbowfish, tetras and other fish are my main focus. I like the unique, beautiful and weird world of aquariums.

Back to Fisheries and govt. wildlife department problems. What's happening with the wildlife department and Fisheries currently? Did they make new laws? I'm curious because I wanted to check what's happening currently with the departments.

I have watched a few fishing videos but those involve anglers yelling when they get a saltwater fish i.e. tuna and grouper. I feel that those look fake. Better watch Hook, Line and Sinker from 7Mate on the weekend. They like BCF stores and they want expensive stuff for fishing :)

Are there groups that focus on the salamanderfish? Any tips to get them and breed them if I'm old enough, and with a permit from Dept. of Wildlife?

Also, any tips for going fishing with dad? He used to like fishing but doesn't go as much anymore. I like keeping freshwater fish (tetras, rainbowfish and others), but also like fishing (game fish and food fish) and snorkelling now. :) I went snorkelling at Rottnest Island once with family.

If you go looking online, I have seen sites that showed old aquariums. There's a collecting group in every hobby, and the collectors of Victorian (era, not Aus) tanks had some cool ones. None are things I would put a fish in, but the decorative metalwork was very impressive. I had one friend down in the US who was a collector of old aquariums, but he died a few years ago and I don't know where his collection went. But there are others out there, and enough old tanks surviving in barns and sheds around the US and Europe. I'd assume in Australia too.

Hi @GaryE. :) I heard that you come into the thread occasionally. I'm new to fishing (catching fish i.e. trout and whiting) and thought that it was a questionable hobby a few years ago, but as I did more research on it, it is more enjoyable for hobbyists. Not only I'm interested in fishkeeping, but will go fishing with family (mostly dad because he used to like it) and snorkelling occasionally in the near future.

Yes. This is interesting.

Mods have to glance at every thread to be sure there is no bullying, or rule breaking that could lead to members fighting, etc. So I check this thread regularly.

Okay. I'm not breaking any rules on the forum. I do understand the forum rules now.
Oh no, all is good. We have to check every thread from everyone. I just sort of speedread over threads as I see new posts in them and your old fishbowl comments caught my eye.
Sometimes people misunderstand each other, or are very rigid thinkers and things get started when they clash, so we have to watch and make sure everyone is playing nicely and trying to be respectful. There aren't many problems and most people who post here are really good at getting along.
