i have recently emptied my rio 240 and i am starting to collect piece by piece everthing needed for my new marine venture so i am just wondering what you guys think to this skimmer? is there anything else that people could recomend with pro's and cons against this model, bearing in mind it has to hang on back at least for the time being, as i will be starting without a sump and then later on ill consider setting up a tank with a sump which i would like to then use the same skimmer on without having to buy another. just another note, things hanging on the back can be hidden but i hate seeing loads of gear in the tank so deffo looing for a hang on for the time being :) cheers

Some people really like the TMC skimmers, others hate em!

But anyways :hi: to the salty side and can't wait to see your journel start :good: How about starting it now?

cheers for the welcome and for the heads up,
to be honest there wouldnt be much to put in it yet, besides empyting my rio taking out the internal filter and looking for gear, i should be picking up the skimmer this week also looking at the power heads this week, maybe bucket of salt next week as well as test kits, its gonna be probably at least 4 months or so before i end up even getting any lr in as i am on a budget and i really want to buy piece by piece and know that what i am buying is suitable the first time round so as not to be wasting money,

when it comes to the power heads which would you recomend? i was thinking of two koralia 2's would this give me enough turn over?

the other things im going to have to consider is lighting as i know the std twin t8's i have aint gonna be enough for the tank however i am going to run them with reflectors when i start the tank as FOWLR then when i can afford to after getting the tank running look at a luminaire either MH or T5's, and starting a reef, is there any reason why i cant start of as a FOWLr using the t8s?

im also debatin as to wether or not it would be beneficial for me to buy my own ro unit for filling/making salt mix's, making toping up water or buying RO from my lfs (which i still need to ask them how much they charge) what do you do

eh I disagree, you have already started  - howabout pm ing a MOD, Ski or BigC and asking to have this moved to the journels? You could then just change the title - woo hoo

collecting everything you need and researching is half the fun, patience is a virtue on the salty side

2 x k2 would give you 19.16r - so enough for a fowlr

lighting is fine for a fowlr and as you say you can upgrade as and when

ok cheers for the reply well usefull, just had a look at the ro and ro/di units, and i aint sure if i should be going for straight forward ro or ro/di unit as i have only read about people using ro water. and i aint 100 percent about the difference between the 2

as for the journal i will start a fresh over there using all the info etc and my planned hardware etc on a fresh sheet lol

yes, would be best to get an ro unit with a di pod on it :good: the DI unit helps to bring the the water down to 0 TDS, which is what we all strive for :good: (DI - it's just another filter)
