while that method does work for removal (As does putting vasiline around the tick/holding a hot match to the butt of the tick/ and many other "remedies", you really should not do this as it casues the tick to regurgitate and if it is carrying bacteria (ie Lyme disease ) makes it easier to transmit the pathogen. Dogs can and do get Lyme disease. and not always easy to treat (i HAVE lyme and have been going thru extensive medical treatment for it-not a fun illness at ALL and really debilitating).
best method of tick removal= fine tipped tweezers. grasp the tick as close to the head as possible and using steady outword pressure slowly pull it out. dont yank and dont twist. the tick will let go. seal it in a piece of tape and throw it away.
just a caution about tick removal "remedies". maual removal is much better, especially if you live in a lyme endemic area. terrible illness to have. cant imagine a poor pet with lyme (and ive known many dogs in my area who have contracted it.
good luck.
