Thoughts Of A First Timer!

Excellent thank you guys. I should have some photo's tomorrow night of things looking roughly how I'd like.

Sadly I'm unable to get plants this weekend however I decided to set the tank up last night. I'm looking at ordering in ammonia as trying to find it in a local store is nigh impossible! I've used a few fish flakes to get things rolling in the meantime till I most likely order some online unless you guys have anywhere you know of getting some in the UK?

Heres an update photo. Loved the film The Mask so as soon as I saw it I had to get it!

You can easily get ammonia online from eBay for example, just type in cycling ammonia, you should get stuff like Kleen Off household ammonia or a small bottle of Aquarium Ammonia, I've used this stuff no problem at all and other members have used Kleen Off without issues as well. Just a case of ensuring you input the correct strenght of ammonia on the calulator for your tank volume.

You may be lucky to find a bottle Kleen Off at larger Homebase store in household cleaning section but a lot of them do not stock this stuff.

I would not use fish food / flakes as this makes your tank water messy as well as being very inaccurate doses, and also you run the risk of getting unsightly small whitish worms in your tank called planeria, best avoided.

I kinda like the wooden face mask decor you have in the tank and the sand looks awesome as well, a good start, you'll get there bit by bit

Looking forward to this, the vision is a nice tank. It's a good size to start with too! I ordered a bottle of Kleen Off ammonia from eBay for a couple of quid, it worked a treat.

Well, thoughts since my last update. Fishless cycles are boring! :(

However plants this weekend so new photos will be on the way.

Boring is far better than stressful from all the sick and dying fish.

Oh I agree and I know it's the best for the fish. It's just the waiting process that's not overly fun!

They certainly are boring. But once the cycle is out of the way you stock everything the boredom soon disappears. I ordered my fish online and was tenterhooks on the delivery day waiting for them to arrive. It's very exciting.

Well, a few plants have been added to the tank which is nice. Getting some more mid week as they are out for delivery. Ammonia has been in for 4 days and still won't drop below 3ppm which is a tad annoying but i'm sure it'll get there. Picture below.

It'll get there. Patience is a virtue as they say. The plants will help too.

After speaking to a friend and getting some filter media we're getting there, I've dropped 3.0ppm in 24 hours which is good news!

Looking at stock I'm really interested in Discus so I'm researching as much as I can into them. More plants on the way Thursday!

Brilliant. See we told you patience pays off ;) do you mean that you are processing both the ammonia and nitrite in 24 hours? Or just the ammonia so far?

I've never kept discus but they are beautiful. From what I understand they can be a bit challenging especially in terms of water quality and stocking numbers. Research is key. Make sure you find out what type of water you have - pH and water hardness in particular - before stocking.

Both, i'm keeping an eye on the Nitrate levels to see that spike it's on about 25ppm.

25ppm is reasonably high. If ammonia and nitrite are both 0 within 24 hours you're cycled :D

It should be able to process both at the same rate... that's assuming you got equal parts of the colony when transferring the media over.

I generally ignore the number for the nitrate test.  Its unreasonably difficult to read.  4ppm ammonia would become about 15ppm.
