This Forum Needs A "clean Up"

What should we do about "Broken" pinned threads?

Completly agree with you OF - nothing beats the reassurance of an answer from a knowledgable member :good: and thats how we build a sense of community. If everyone just read the pinned sections and never came on and talked on the forum, we wouldn't have a forum.

So, I for one don't mind the same question being asked over and over again - just means another opportunity to grow the forum for the future and add yet one more person who adds and gives something to TFF

Thank you

Thank you for bringing those unarchived pins to our attention, they are in the process of being archived. :)

Thank you

i would update many of the planted stuff, but most people dont bother to read it and ask stupid questions anyway.
but anything that gets posted up in the planted sections soon gets 'shouted down' by the 2WPG club anyway.

Agree with both of your comments, someone with the equivalent of 2WPG yesterday was so called low light according to another member, in my eyes this is Very high, was shot down for that, also the fact that Co2 is more than likely needed when light is in excess of 2WPG, again, the 2 WPG crew come along and tell us that it's not needed, mainly those from outside the UK if I am honest. Cannot believe some peoples narrow mindedness, I agree that the pins need some work, especially those on algae.
yeah, what annoys me is the people that are like, i want to grow some live plants, i have plenty of lighting, why arent they growing. !
then they say that they arent using fertilisers or co2. so they are limiting 2 of the major 3 factors.
imagine if you took co2 and nutrients away from terrestrial plants, do you think they would grow?
they is an big differance between, plants eeking out an existence (some people call that 'growing') and plants flourishing, like in the tank in my journal.

@ OF,

many of the planted tank guys have now moved over to uKaps, because this forum is lacking in the wealth of knowledge (even more so now). Many of us have given up trying to argue with the 2WPG club, trying to make them realise what nonsense they are preaching, so we have uprooted and gone. (no plant pun intended)
Now its just left to a few 'newbies' to call the shots, claiming that the waste a fish produces is enough nutrients for the plants in a 2WPG tank.

That is a real shame as a forum is only as good as its members - maybe they need to be coming back and helping that section to 'grow' :p

Glad to see you are still 'rooting' :p away :good: and helping people on the forum but also being part of the larger sense of community

To be called a teacher and garner respect as such is a great privilege. A forum will always be in flux. There will always be new people coming in with the same old questions and older members going out who have either given up on the hobby or tired of giving advice. Patience is a virtue.

but surely if you can use the search function and find an answer so qucikly, its pointless in posting. It wastes everyones time and just bumps down the more urgent or important topics.

there again, you might as well delete the search function, seemingly im the only one that uses it.

I use the search function a lot. It is only when I am unable to find an answer to my question that I then make a new thread.

Trying to 'legislate' members into using the search button is like telling people to stop texting while they drive. Many will stop doing it. Many won't. That's the advantage of a forum. Those that answer the basic questions will move on to challenge themselves to advance to the more difficult questions. Newer members will usually enjoy the presence of getting their footing here and take on the basic questions as they gain experience.

It never hurts to remember your roots and return to help some newbies. SH

i think that they should keep the thread, and get the OP to fix it. because, even if the images etc don't work, a lot of the info is still useful.

cheers :good:

the search usually brings up rubbish!

I must admit i don't find this. though, for sure, you need to trawl through a lot of posts. but, as with posting information already posted a myriad of times, it takes patients. the main reason a search brings up "rubbish", is, your search parameters are too broad. as noted, using a members name, narrows down the field. as for "pinned" items? I never, knowingly, use them. but i guess they come up in searches, every now and then.

Personally, i think "pinned" items, should have a shelf life, say 6 months. remember, even un pinned topics, are still their for a search. Profiles and hardware topics, may need excluding, from this, though.

Well, here's an idea- as well as having a pin encouraging people to use search, some tips on using it would be handy too. For example, I have a vague idea about using +, - in the search term, but if someone who understands how our specific forum search works made a topic telling people how to get more out of searching, it certainly wouldn't do any harm.

well, i'm not sure its "pin worthy", but this is what i do.

1, always use the advanced option.
2, always click, "search posts only".
3, type a, connected, key word, if possible. the less common the word, the more relevant the search will be.
4, if you want to research comments, made here, use the members name in the search. even controversial comments, cause discussion. often revealing more than you expect.
5, and most importantly, patients. any, useful, results will take time to find.

i did find this how to use forum search

i don't use any wild cards (+,-) even the (,) i find clouds the results. also i cant find any guide to what they are.
