Think My Betta Is Dying

Hello again and thanks for the recap - yes, the thread is quite long now and it's easy to forget stuff LOL

Glad to hear he's still alive, albeit not much better.

Is his tank really only 8 litres? That's only about 1.5 UK gallons - and normally you can't put a heater in anything that small. What's the wattage of your thermostat? I'm just curious because I didn't think they made heaters that small. I hope he's not been cooking in there...

Re that bogwood in his tank - was that prepared properly? I can see that the water is yellow tinged but that's not unusual with bogwood, although it can alter the PH, so regular water changes will help with that to prevent it getting too acidic.

It is possible for parasites and bacteria to enter an aquarium via bogwood if it's not been sterilised properly.

Did you leave a gap between stopping the Protozin and starting the Myxazin? And did you do a water change before starting the Myxazin? I've probably already asked this, too, but have you removed your carbon sponge from the filter if it had one?

I know...too many questions LOL  Just trying to help.

the bog wood was from when it was in my main tank before i rescaped it, before that it was in brothers other tank so no worries there (not the original tank my betta is now in but the one after that).

The heater is only small and i have a thermometer in the tank so i can keep track of the temp, to be fair i've only seen my heater switch on once.

The yellow/tea stain water is from an indian almond leave ( put a new one in when did my last water change), maybe i should take this out.

i left 48 hours (ish) before changing meds and did a water change, think it was about 40-50%. the filter is s small HOB borrowed and has no carbon bits in etc.

i'm completely stumped on what to do to be honest, the only thing left to do is stop my current med, do a full water change and start on the internal bacteria med i have bought.

the latest pics don't really show how thin he has gone in the body, i noticed late last night when he faced the other way that his other eye is a dark colour, with a dark iris, something Wilder asked and i initially said it was white, as you can see in the pics one eye is white with a black iris but his other eye is different.

costing me a small fortune to try and get him better, if he pulls through though it will all be worth it.

thanks
jonathan

I would phone a vet and get some minocycline, tetracycline, Kanamycin
Also add some vitamin b supplement to his diet.

The antibiotics will destroy the beneifical bacteria in your filter.

The fish stands a chance at the moment with the spine not bent.
I think your fish has a bad strain of bacteria or fish tb.

Treatment and Control:

Kanamycin + Vitamin B-6 for 30 days is the most effective treatment that we know of for tuberculosis. The fish should be quarantined during treatment time. Liquid baby vitamins found at your local pharmacy are a good source of vitamin B-6. One drop per every 5 gallons of aquarium water is sufficient. Replace the vitamins according to how much water is changed in the tank during treatment time.

Is the iris black in both eyes?

well my betta died over the weekend, found him upside down on the bottom of the tank on saturday afternoon. in a way i'm glad because he was suffering.

i was actually going to put him down over the weekend.

i also read something PFK over the weekend about fish tb and how it can transfer to humans, really scary stuff.

if it was fish tb i need to keep an eye out for symptoms.

just like to say thank you for every bodies help, one last thing am i advised to dose my existing main tank with some internal bacteria meds as a precaution to something???

cheers
Jonathan

Bless him. Sorry for your loss.
R.I.P.

Lfs bought meds won't touch the tb bacteria. You need antibiotics.

Rare for humans to catch fish tb, you have to be exposed to it a very long time.
You more prone if you have a weak immune system.

If you have cuts on your hands wear latex gloves just as a precaution.

I agree about keeping a close eye on the other fish for symtoms.

Good Luck.
