I just broke the 2nd thermometer this week....just bought it last night to replace the one that broke.......I am ready to change...what kind do you prefer?

Did fish break them or did you break them?

One of my Silver Dollars ran right into mine and broke it, it was just one of those suction cup ones that are like 4 inches long that you put on the INSIDE of the tank. What kind were yours??

Im not real sure Mama what is happening to them but it sounds like you need to get one of them that sticks to the out side of the tank and after you get it there use an internal to verify the temps match up.
Thats the only thing I can think to tell you right off

Hi Mama

You could get an electronic thermometer. In the uk you can pick one up for less than £10.

I use a combination of an outisde "stuck on glass one" as a rough guide and an electronice one as a more precise measure.... :D

i use a suction cup one that floats and a sticky one on the out side and they have allways given the same temp reading.both work well

Thanks everyone......I didn't know they had electric one...I'll check into that.

It is the one with the suction cup and the red stuff in the bottom that keeps breaking.....it is my fault....1st time I had a bag floating, and it hit the side of the tank and broke.
2nd time I was cleaning tank..tapped it up against the side and it broke...I think I had it in a bad place!
Thanks again everyone! :D

how big is your tank. If two both broke it might be due to pressure buyt i doubt that would happen. I use the smal suction cup ones.

What do the electric ones look like and how do they work?? I'm here in the US, can you buy them here?

being that i have very large teethed playful fish, putting anything in the tank that does not get broke or eaten is a real challenge. sponge filters get picked apart, thermometers get rolled around the tank like a ball.... you think of it, they play with it. some of the newer filters have thermometers in them, along with heaters which mine are also playing with. at night you can hear it tapping against the glass. use a stick on type outside of the tank and when i do my feedings i hold the thermometer in the tank for five minutes to get an accurate reading. you need atleast 3-5 minutes of being exposed to the water to get an accurate reading.

I use a stick on because my fish dont have to have closly regulated water temp.

I had a similar problem but with my heater. I went to transplant some of my plants and as my elbow was just getting wet I noticed that the heater was broken. I don't know exactly how they work but was :hyper: shocked :hyper: that I didnt get electrocuted!! :fun: I have no I dea what broke it but heck the cheapest heater I can find is US $20. My water temp ranges now from 74 to 82 F. I even have some fry to let me know they are all happy as mollies. :D
