Their Spawning!

lol no I'm not bugging them too much. I've actually only gone over there one or two times where they could actually see me. The other couple times I crawled in (LOL) and stayed down just out of their eye level :p

That's a pretty nice bubble nest.
lol yeah.. thats a large size taco bell cup and he filled the ENTIRE underneath of the cup and they are coming OUT the cup too lol. I think thats why shes finally gone under :D

lol I guess so! I have a question. For about 30 min or so now she has been on the other side of the tank and they haven't been doing anything. They took 'breaks' before but not this long. Hes not attacking her (hes pretty gentle) but goes over to see if shes got more lol. She looks pretty skinny now. Do you think they are done or should I leave her a little longer since hes not attacking her.

sounds like they're done, I usually give them about an hour then take her out, just to be sure.

Thanks :D I took her out. She started freaking out and he didn't come any where near her. (She just darted across the tank and darted back and then he chased her but didn't 'attack' at all.. went back to his nest.) I think they are done.

Question. When should daddy come out. When they start to hatch or when they are free swimming?

When they are free swimming...the fry will need Daddy to help them stay in the nest as some will fall out and won't be able to get back up to the nest without help. But once you see they are starting to go free swimming you can take him out. It's just amazing to watch the father as he catches or collect any that have fallen out and then gently places them back up in the nest, usually knocking out more then he replaced with his big body and fins, Lol. It will become an endless job for him once they hatch, but don't worry, he'll be fine :)

congrats again!

usually i take daddy out a bit early becuase i always visulize him eating hte fry instead of spitting them back out, i'ts nerve wrecking it ell you  I usually take him out 24-36 hours after the babies start to hatch, at this point they usually aren't free swimming yet, but will be shortly

Actually I get nervous like that too, but I wait until I see several free swimming, then I figure the rest are close behind, so that's when I take him out. Although the father of my red spawn I kept in longer and he was collecting the fry that were swimming out of the cup area and putting them back in the nest, he was working so hard, it was the cutest thing. I could just see him yelling at the kids, "get back here, I'm not telling you again, stay in the yard! You're going to get hit by a speeding Shark if you go out there!"

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't, depends on the individual fish. The plan is not to, but if they've been in the tank a while without spawning, then I'll feed them, try to get their energy back up, Lol. Once they spawn though, the male usually gets no food, in fact most males won't even accept any food while tending the nest. The female of course gets a nice big meal once she's removed.
