The ram cichlid project

Convict cichlids are a little much for me right now, so I'm going to go with a more peaceful cichlid; the German blue ram. I was going to put a pair in a 10-gallon standard but then I was informed (after five sites saying a 10 gallon was okay) that they will live in that but not really be happy in there. So, I'm going to get a 15 or 20-gallon tall aquarium and put it on the bottom shelf of a sturdy cast-iron stand used to hold a 10-gallon on top.

Well let me reinform you, I have 6 different breeding pairs all in 10 gallon tanks. I have over 600 fry, so whoever told you that probably has no idea what they’re talking about. Make sure you have soft water and a temperature of 82-86 or you won’t have much luck.

Go for your 20 Gal, that's the minimum i would have them in. Even if my minimum was 10 gal I see no reason why a 20 would hurt, larger volumes are more stable ect.

10 gallon is about big enough for a Betta, go with 20 if you can.

Are they are bonded pair?

I don't have them yet. And I'll be getting them from my LFS, so I can look and see which ones like each other.

If you have room for a 20, of course get the 20, but it irks me when people (who probably don’t keep Rams) say 10 is WAAAY too small. Not calling anyone out in this thread btw. Here’s several different aged fry and one of the breeding pairs I have (Gold/Regular cross which are the parents of the smallest fry shown) Sensitive fish like Rams will not breed if they’re uncomfortable, so 10 gallons is adequate, though more is always better.

Thanks everyone! But I would rather scrounge up room to get a 20 or 29 gallon.
