The Price Of Play Sand

Here in the UK a big bag of it is £4 or around, which is roughly $8. But things tend to be cheaper in the US so anything under $8 :good: .

its been awhile since i bought sand but im thinking its more like $5 a bag....i could be wrong though so don't take my word on it...just wanted to give you an idea.

Actually I just went and bought some play sand from HomeDepot, it was white and it costs $3.70 for a 50 pound bag. At Menards it 2 something for brown play sand 50 pound bag thats what I have now but its to fine so I went with the white from HomeDepot. :good:

Ooo the white from Home Depot sounds good! And a good price too. :good:

play sand is a pain to clean... takes hours of rinsing for the water to run clear..

pool filter sand doesn't really even need rinsed.. a little more expensive but worth it.

Please let me know what you find out when you buy sand becuase i am wanting to put sand in my next tank but i have been wondering how do you do it so it stays at the bottom and doesnt go into clumps like sand and water usually do. Please let me know how i would go about doing this in my next tank. I am looking at a 55 or 30 gallon!

Thanks!

To me it seems that pool sand would still need to me washed. Even with playsand it says it as been prewashed, but due to all the handing of the bags it creates dust in the bag. Thats really the only reason for washing it in the first place to reduce the cloudness of the water. I don't clean it for hours seeing our it takes me hours doing my way in the first place. I just wash each bucket for awhile add it until I get the amount I want then add water add water clarifier chemical to clump up the debris then usually the next day its fine. Cloudy water do to sand doesn't hurt the fish its just a pain trying to look into the tank. Everything I have wrote in this post is from my experience so don't hold me to anything. :good:

Dean I have a 55 gallon and have had sand for a few months now. I use play sand very cheap and looks good. Right now I have very fine sand in my tank but in a few hours I'll be taking it out and repacing it with white sand thats not so fine still play sand though. The sand I have now if brown but just to fine and its a pain. With the brown sand I have now I had to add 110 pounds in a 55 gallon to get 2 inchs across. Which in my option is way to much to have to add(thats how fine it is). My buddies use the white that I got tonight and they say it works great and didn't have to add nearly as much as I did. Here is how to do it! Drain you tank completly take out the gravel or what ever your using. Wash the sand in a bucket pan or what ever you have. FILL it with sand run water over it until it over flows then you will see the water get cloudy let the water run and overflow until the water clears up. Swoosh water out with you had will help get it out. Once the water isn't getting cloudy any more add it to you tank keep doing this until you get a even amount about 2 inchs or how ever much you want acroos the tank. Once your done putting sand in the tank grab a plater fill your jugs or how ever you fill your tank. Pour the water on the plate so the water isn't hitting the sand directly. Alsao when you do water changes and add water use a plate or wahtever just don't pour the water directly on the sand because it will stir it up bad. If its cloudy once you fill your tank after adding the sand you can get a bottle of water clarifier that clumps up the debis so the filter can catch it. Once the cloudniess goes away usually a day youcan add palnts move stuff around and you won't have to worry abut it getting cloudy. If some of the sand does rise in the water if will fall back down right away. The only way it will make the water cloudy again is if you go stire crazy in the sand. Hope this helps. I've also heard instead of using a bucket to rinse the sand use a pillow case fill it with sand hang it up and still a garden hose in there and leave it on for awhile. :good:

I am just looking for a aproximate price so I can add up how much I am going to spend the next weekly shopping trip. I want to get read of the nasty pink gravel I have in one of my 29 gallon tanks.

See what I mean!:

So how many bags would I need for a 29 gallon tank? Do I keep the filter running while it is cloudy or would it clog it up? I long does it basically take to clear up anyway? I need some basic facts.

Ok here you go if you end up getting the white sand from home Depot get one bag 50 pounds will be plenty. My buddie has the same tank as you and he didn't even use a whole bag. Make sure there is no water in the tank when you add sand or you will be sorry(it will get so cloudy you won't be able to see the back of the tank.) Once you get the sand in there add water and get the temp of the water back to were you want it put you fish back in the cloudy water won't hurt them. The way I do it with my 55 is I have a 20 gallon I put my plants and fish and filter in so my filters can keep running.Yes keep you filter running while your tank is cloudy, This will help clear it up plus you don't want your filters not running that long because it will kill the bacteria. Once you add sand and water your water will most likely be cloud so when you go buy the sand stop at the petstore and get a bottle of Tetra Aqua Water Clarifier add this once you fill your tank back up. Follow the insructions on the back next day it should have cleared up almost all the way. What this chemical does its clumps up the partilcles of sand so the filter can catch them making the process of getting your tank clear very fast. Also check the propeller in your filter every few days, the thing that turns your motor you can just pullit out(don't do this while the filter is running) and make sure there is no sand built up on it if so wash it off. I haven't had probelms with mine.

Hewre is your facts sheet:

How many bags: 1 50 pound bag
How much around $3.70
Other things to get: One small bottle of Tetra Aqua Wter Clarifier: 3 to 4 something
Other things needed to know read my other posts in this topic.

I'm going to change mine over tonight in a few hours I'll get on and let you guys know how it went when I'm done later tonight. :good:

Ps it takes about 24 hours or longer to clear up depending on how well you rinse it

Thank you very much! That was very help full! I will put the fish in a extra tank I have while I do all that. :)

-_- I personally wouldn't bother with that, adding chemicals wont actually make the silt that makes the water cloudy magically dissapear, and the silt does settle down completely within a few days. Also, as said before water cloudy from silt doesn't harm fish at all :good: .
Though i am interested to know how it works, does anyone know? Maybe it says on the back of the bottle, but the internet descriptions are very vague.
